The poem “Oranges” was a poem about a boy’s first love. The poet feels happy and nervous because he is in love. In the poem it says,”With rouge. I smiled, Touched her shoulder, and led Her down the street,” Because of being with the girl, the boy felt happy causing him to smile. When this event happened, he then felt happy being with her because he loves her. If he wasn’t happy being with her he wouldn’t have touch her shoulder or even be by her. I fingered A nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate That cost a dime, I didn't say anything. Since the girl picked out a chocolate worth 10￠, the boy felt nervous since he only had dime. When this event happened, he felt nervous since he didn’t have enough money to pay for the girl’s chocolate bar. If he wasn’t nervous about paying for the chocolate he would have said something. The poet is in love since he is happy and nervous.

The poem “Oranges” was a poem about a boys first love. The poet feels happy and nervous because he is in love. He feels happy because stanza 15-17 it states “ I smiled, Touched her shoulder, and led Her down the street…” When the young boy smiled, it showed his happiness to be with the girl because when you are happy, you tend to smile. He made the choice to touch her shoulder and lead her down the street because he wanted the girl to feel protected and he wants her to know that she should feel safe with him. He wants to take charge and let the girl know that she is being cared for and that he loves her and that's why he decided to do this action. During the time when the young boy and the girl walked down to the drugstore, he asked what she wanted. He gets nervous because stanza 30-34 states, “I fingered A nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn't say anything.” When you are nervous, you don’t say anything or you get very shy. When the young boy didn’t say anything we can infer that he got nervous because he knows that he only has 5 cents and the candy that the girl wants is 10 cents. He wants to please the young girl so she can be happy and love him like he loves her. The young boy wants to make sure that he can afford the things that the girl wants, no matter the price of the object.

The poem “Oranges” was a poem about a boy’s first love. The boy is feeling joy, love, and his head is full of thoughts. In the poem it states “Cold, and weighted down With two oranges in my jacket.” This is significant because he is not being weighed down because of the two orange in his pockets, but his thoughts are what are making him feel this way. He is thinking about the girl and his feelings towards her. It is making him feel heavy because he is so nervous about it. He really wants to impress her and make her like him. Another line from the poem is “A dog barked at me, until She came out pulling at her gloves.” This is also important because the dog is barking and barking and then it just stops. The girl comes out and it is almost like his whole world stop when he sees her. He is so in love that even looking at her is a distraction. The boy is feeling joy, love, and his head is full of thoughts because he loves her so much.

He says “and asked what she wanted light in her eyes, a smile starting at the corner of her mouth I fingered a nickel in my pocket and when she lifted a chocolate that costed a dime I didn’t say anything” because he is fidgeting it tells us that he is nervous and he is nervous because he wants to buy her the candy she wants he wants to do this because he is in love, but he might not have enough money so he is nervous to disappoint her.

The poem “Oranges” was a poem about a boy’s first love. The poet feels happy and nervous because he is in love. In the texts it says, “At her gloves, face bright with rouge. I smiled, touched her shoulder, and led her down the street, across.” This significant because when he put your hand on a girl or boy that you like then you will be happy so he is in love with this girl he smiled because he is with her. The action of putting his hand on her shoulder is important that he is happy because you won’t put your hand on a stranger shoulder no, you put your hand on a shoulder on a person that you like. A reason that he is nervous is in the text it says, “I fingered a nickel in my pocket, and when she lifted a chocolate that cost a dime, I didn't say anything.” The action of him touching the nickel in his pocket because he doesn’t have enough money but he doesn’t say anything is important because some people fidget when they are nervous and does not want to say anything so they have to do something. If he had spoken up that he did not had enough money then he would probably disappoint her and she would not be happy but he did not do that because he doesn’t want to disappoint her and make her happy. For these reasons it shows that he feels happy and nervous because he was fidgeting and touching her shoulder.

In the poem “Oranges” there is a young boy that in love for the first time. He feels very nervous and happy. Defined by the poem, “A nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate, That cost a dime, I didn't say anything.” It shows that he didn’t have enough money and he didn’t want her to disapprove of him. If he said to her that he didn’t have enough she maybe would have changed her mind about him In the poem he also describes another feeling; happiness. In the poem it states “Her unwrap the chocolate. I peeled my orange, That was so bright against, The gray of December.” this shows happiness because throughout the poem the oranges seem normal but when he seemed to impress her the oranges grew a brighter color symbolizing happiness. If he would of displeased her, he would have thought that the oranges grew a uglier and darker orange.

The poem “Oranges” was a short poem about a 12 year old boy’s first love. In the story the boy was feeling such joy that his first love liked him back and that he got to spend time with her. In the poem it states, “I smiled, touched her shoulder, and led her down the street.” This act of him taking her shoulder, and leading her down the street smiling shows that he is in love with her and wants to be next to her for all the time he can get. You usually wouldn’t take your siblings by the shoulder even if you love them more than your first love because that’s just how it is. Though when you are truly in love with someone no matter if it is you first or tenth love you just want to be by them and protect them.

However later in the poem he starts to feel a bit anxious because he does not have enough money to buy her the candy she wants from the store. So he ends up paying with his nickel and an orange for her ten cent candy and, “set them quietly on the counter. When I looked up, the lady's eyes met mine, and held them, knowing very well what it was all about. Usually when someone places things quietly on a table or counter they either do not want to get caught or are nervous about what they are doing. This also shows that he was in love because he would do anything for her to get her what she wants. In the poem the boy was both joyous and anxious because he loved this girl so much and would do anything to make her happy.

The poem Oranges is a poem about a boy’s first love. In the story, The poet is nervous and happy, because he is in love with a girl. I know that he is happy because in the poem it says ” Peeled my orange That was so bright against The gray of December That, from some distance, Someone might have thought I was making a fire in my hands.” This is significant because when he opened the orange it was like an accomplishment. The reason it was an accomplishment is because he was able to get the chocolate for her. Which is good for him because when they were at the store she wanted that even though he only had a nickel and two oranges. He is happy that the one orange was able to get what the girl wanted and that he made her happy. The girl really wanted the chocolate because “her eyes lit up” when she saw it. Even though he only had two oranges he gave one up for her. I know that he is nervous because in the text it says “I fingered A nickel in my pocket, And when she lifted a chocolate That cost a dime,I didn't say anything” When the girl pulled out the chocolate he was nervous because he did not have enough money to buy it. He did not want to disappoint the girl if he did not get it because he loved her. That is what made him nervous the fact that if he was not able to get it for the girl that she would be sad and he did not want that to happen because he loved her.

The poem “Oranges” was a poem about a boy’s first love. He feels very anxious but happy because he is in love. In the poem it says “The first time I walked With a girl, I was twelve, Cold, and weighted down With two oranges in my jacket.” This shows he is anxious because he is weighted down because he is in love for the first time which can be and is very stressful to take your crush out on a “date” and he does not want to disappoint her. “I smiled, Touched her shoulder, and led Her down the street, across A used car lot and a line Of newly planted trees,” This proves that he is happy because he smiles when he sees the girl touches her shoulder and they walk to the trees that resemble their new found love. Most of those if not all the characteristics are what happens when your in love and happy. In conclusion he is very nervous but overall he is happy and content with how his date went.

Evidence to why the boy is happy is because from the text it states, “At her gloves, face bright With rouge.

The poem “Oranges”, was about a boy’s first love. In this poem, the poet feels happy yet also anxious since he is in love. Towards the beginning of the text, it states “At her gloves, face bright With rouge. I smiled, Touched her shoulder”. Being with the girl, made the boy happy which caused him to smile. In addition, when he was touching her shoulder, it was also a sign of love since he wanted to make her feel protected.

Another line from the poem would be, “I fingered A nickel in my pocket… I took the nickel from My pocket, then an orange, And set them quietly on The counter.” From him, fidgeting with his nickel it represents how he’s nervous and setting down his payment quietly, it also expressed how he wasn’t confident about it. Furthermore, his payment was essentially a nickel and an orange for a ten cent chocolate. Not to mention, the boy was mainly willing to pay for the chocolate because he didn’t want to disappoint the girl. Then due to his action, of trying not to disappoint her, it shows that he cares for her which is also what love is about. To sum it up, the poet feels both joyful & nervous because of his love for this girl that he would do anything, in order to make her happy.
