Skeleton riders go down the icy track head first with their head and feet millimeters off the track. Fortunately, both sports do require the athletes to wear helmets.

When summarizing the sport it sounds very easy. You just hold onto the sled and go down the track, right? In the Winter Olympics a lot more than just holding on for dear life goes into the skeleton. Skeleton riders or "sliders" give themselves advantages during the race . Most sliders times vary only about a few hundredths of a second.

The Winter Olympic sport skeleton originated in St. Moritz, Switzerland. The name of the sport came from the fact that the board is so thin it resembles a human skeleton. The first skeleton track was developed in Switzerland i 1884. Skeleton didn't qualify as an Olympic sport until 1928 when the Winter Olympic games were held in St. Moritz, Switzerland.

The skeleton race has probably the simplest scoring system out of every single Olympic Winter game. Whoever passes the finish line with the fastest time is the winner. The sliders scores are so competitive they can get as close as hundredths of seconds between first and third. Sliders try to sprint as fast as possible at the beginning of the race to gain as much momentum as they can before diving onto their sled. An entire skeleton is usually under one minute.

An opportunity cost for sliders would have to be the wear and tear on their bodies. When you push a 70lb sled and dive onto it everyday your body is eventually gonna start to get tired and worn down. Skeleton is a very dangerous sport and if you don't know exactly what you're doing then it could be life threatening.
