Civilians who recoil only at nuclear war but not other methods of organized killing only show their hypocrisy. General William Tecumseh Sherman famously said “I am tired and sick of war. Its glory is all moonshine. It is only those who have neither fired a shot nor heard the shrieks and groans of the wounded who cry aloud for blood, for vengeance, for desolation. War is hell.”
http://thefederalist.com/2015/08/06/why-nuclear-weapons-make-the-world-more-peaceful/

Killing though war and killing with nuclear weapons is still killing. Either way, there is a similar result. Only the inexperienced beleive bombs make our world safer, when in reality, they are not controllable.

It is the taboo nature of nuclear weapons use that helps to stabilize weapons of such appalling power within an anarchic international system.
Nuclear Weapons and World Peace.pdf
This is essentially saying that the restrictive and threatening nature of nuclear weapons is exactly what keeps the world safe. If there is that constant, ominous threat over everyone’s head, then no country will fully commit to fighting another country. The bombs are what is restraining major war outbreaks, thus keeping our world safer.

I do not think nuclear weapons keep our world safer in the long term outlook. They could so easily be set off, whether it’s intentional or not, which will trigger a chain of deadly and catastrophic events. Millions of casualties, radioactive air, destruction, climate change, etc. I don’t think it is worth having nuclear weapons just so that maybe another country will feel so threatened they decide to not attack. When, in a split second, the world could be obliterated and millions could die.
