When the plague was around, it was believed that the main cause of it was from poison in the air that the victims would breathe in. So to try and prevent this from happening, people that lived in 1348 to 1350 would use aromatic herbs and wood to avoid any foul smelling air. However, because christianity was very popular around that time, it was also believed that God had sent the plague to punish the world for their sins, therefore people would pray and take part in other religious acts to prevent it. The Middle Ages was known as the age of faith where the Catholic Church overlooked medical knowledge and treatment. Bleeding the patient was believed to release poisons from the victims body.

Discrimination against Jewish people was extremely serious during the fourteenth century, they had been isolated from all Christian society. They were the ones blamed for everyone else's suffering, they were believed capable of poisoning the wells of other Christian communities and infecting the people who lived in it. In September 1348, a group of Jews were put on trial in Chillon, and were charged with poisoning wells at Neustadt. From November of that year Jews were burnt to death in cities throughout Germany. These massacre deaths, together with the losses from the black death, meant that many large and small Jewish communities never recovered.

At the worst times of the black death, towns and countries where overwhelmed by the large number of victims of the plague. Churches were quickly filling up with dead bodies and they didn't know what to do if they ran out of space. it was reported that in Avignon, France, England and London bodies were thrown into rivers or piled up in pits due to the lack of suitable burial sites.

The black death effected people in three ways. The most common was the bubonic plague. This made swelling or buboes appear on the victims neck, armpits and groin. These buboes could become as large as an apple, this version of the plague was transmitted by contaminated fleas. The second form was the pneumonic plague which effected the respiratory system and spreads through the body. The third was the septicaemia plague, which attacked the victim through the blood system.

Impacts on Towns and Cities

The black death killed entire families within days and destroyed villages fast. The huge decline in population caused many villages, towns, and cities of Western Europe to become virtually deserted. Markets closed by the loss of workers who were victims, grain rotted in fields from not being picked and livestock roamed freely unattended until they perished. Thriving towns were now reduced to the size of small villages. Large areas of full-populated land had now turned to wilderness and nothing, and thousands of human settlements were completely abandoned and fell to ruins.
