The canal project was abandoned after newer forms of energy were discovered. In the mid 1900s, the canal was filled with 22,000 tons of municipal and chemical waste by the company that bought the land from William Love. The company then covered the waste filled canal with dirt and sold it to the city. Homes and schools were built on top of the Love Canal.
