On top of that I would say that children MUST be helped and defended, no matter what: Still I Rise does that, they deal with countries where young girls and boys are in danger.

It’s interesting to know about Nicolò Govoni’s life when he was a student.

He didn’t use to like school because he thought  it was boring and his teachers believed that he was an empty-minded, incapable person. Fortunately, there was a teacher, Nicoletta that believed he was capable and special, even if nobody else supported him. She knew that he was unique because he payed more attention at the smallest detail and the way he wrote was extremely sentimental and poetic. 

It’s easy to understand that she played an important role in Nicolò’s life and we have to be grateful because it’s thanks to people like her if he became the extremely inspiring person he is today.

STILL I RISE is an organization that deals with unprivileged children who can't go to school and works tremendously hard to let them have a brighter future.

Nicolò Govoni's organization builds up schools in many Countries like Greece (Mazi Educational Center), Kenya ( Still I Rise International School), Syria (Ma’An Educational Center) and Turkey (Beraber International Educational Center)

They are also struggling to build up an Emergency school in the Democratic Republic of Congo.

Not only that, in its educational centers this association offers to girls and boys protection too: in those areas food is insufficient and sanitary and hygienic conditions are extremely inadequate!

Children absolutely can't live in a place which is so dangerous!

Nicolò Govoni is a writer and an activist of 28 years old. He was born in Cremona, in Lombardy, and he is now the president of the organization STILL I RISE, which is born to offer education, protection and dignity to all the children IN NEED.

When he was 20 years old, Nicolò he started being to work as  a volunteer in an orphanage of a tiny village in India. He has stayed in India for 4 years and he has taken got his graduation there, in the at Symbiosis International University.

In 2017 he published an e- book named: “ White like God” to sponsor the education of the children in the orphanage.

After that, Nicolò Govoni left India and moved to Samos, in Greece, where he started working in a refugee camp. Here, in 2018, he founded the humanitarian organization STILL I RISE and opened MAZI MARÌ, which is the first emergency school for children and teenagers who are refugees of the island.

Here in Greece, Nicol Govoni  he wrote a second book named: “If it was your son”, which is basically a complaint against the abuses of the Greek authorities to against the refugees.

Finally during the 2020/2021 Nicolò Govoni has worked hard to open emergency and rehabilitation schools in Turkey, Syria, Kenya and in the Democratic Republic of Congo. 

Today, Nicolò runs the organization Still I Rise in 8 countries and provides gives  work UP to 100 people in the world.

Why did I choose Nicolò Govoni’s organization to talk about charities?

[1] Firstly, because HE IS EXTREMELY YOUNG and thanks to this work thousands of poor children have the possibility to attend a school and to be educated.

[2] Secondly, because he is teaching us how to be open-minded people and how to help others as we can.

[3] Finally - and I would say the most important aspect - he is risking his own life to make the life of many children better.

I’ve decided to focus my attention on this foundation and I think that people should know more about it, for three reasons:

REASON NUMBER ONE: 

First of all/To begin with, The main objective of this foundation is to support and finance  educational and awareness projects about AIDS in developing countries.In fact,   the members/volunteers think that the knowledge of this disease is paramount for preventing and reducing the  number of people affected by this disease and deaths  caused by AIDS all over the World. 

REASON NUMBER TWO:

Secondly, the MPT donates to many NGOs and well-known charities, but also to a huge number of small grassroots organizations, which are usually overlooked by bigger foundations. In total, during the last 21 years, the MTP has founded more than 1,500 projects in almost 60 countries (like India, Uganda, Malawi, Congo, and many more…), by raising more than 17 million dollars for the global battle against AIDS.  In my view,  focusing on smaller charities that work in third World countries is fundamental because those are the countries that need more help and where people are less informed about this disease : because of this, people are more exposed to AIDS/HIV (or similar diseases), and the danger for them to get those diseases is really high.

REASON NUMBER THREE:

On top of that, I am convinced that nowadays , AIDS  is underestimated among young people, even though this   disease is spreading again  all over the world. 

Many people think that today, AIDS  is a problem that impact the poorest areas of the World only, but this is completely wrong!  In fact, in November 2021, the EU and EES countries reported 104.765 new diagnoses.

Therefore, spreading awareness about this topic should be paramount everywhere!

The Mercury Phoenix Trust is a charity organization, with the aim of fighting HIV/AIDS worldwide.

The foundation has been active since The Freddie Mercury Tribute Concert for AIDS Awareness, in 1992. The concert was organized in memory of Freddie Mercury, Queen singer who died in London in 1991 due to AIDS, by the remaining members of the groups and their manager, Jim Beach.

At the moment, the trustees of the MPT are Brian May, Roger Taylor, Jim Beach and Mary Austin. 

The MPT predominantly funds small grassroots charities that often aren't reached by larger NGOs and governments .

The charity is a UK registered AIDS charity and for this reason, is strictly regulated by the British Charities Commission. That’s why the foundation is only able to donate money that they raise, to HIV/AIDS related projects and funds only registered charities.

SOME FACTS ABOUT AIDS/HIV 
HIV is still a major global public health issue. In 2020 37.7 million of people were living with HIV globally (1.7 of them were children) and 16% of them are living without knowing that they have the virus. The countries with the highest number of HIV cases are east and Southern Africa, Western and Central Africa, Asia and Pacific: these countries are not developed as North America or Europe and the local population is not schooled and educated enough so they are not aware of the risk of contracting this type of virus.

HIV (Human Immunodeficiency Virus) is a damaging virus for the immune system’s cells that weakens your ability to fight everyday infections and disease.

AIDS (Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome) is a group of potentially life-threatening infections and illnesses that happen when your immune system has been severely damaged by the HIV virus. While AIDS can't be transmitted from one person to another, the HIV virus can.

There is still not a cure which can defeat this virus at all but, thanks to ART (Antiretroviral Therapy), people with the virus are more able to live a longer and healthier life.

I remember being with a group of friends of mine outside the church of my village. I was little so I don’t  remember this moment well. Despite this, I remember that we sold bags with apples inside and gave them to the people who made an offer.

I think it was extremely amusing because I was with my friends and I was pleased to be a volunteer even though I was little and maybe I didn’t understand the importance of this action. 

Secondly, I would like to dig deep into this Non Profit Organization because they are extremely efficient and active: they invest money in scientific research on multiple sclerosis and they offer social health services to people who deal with MS, patients and their families.

On top of that, AISM is the only organization in Italy which deals with all the aspects of MS in a structured way and respects the rights of people that are affected with this terrible disease.

WHAT IS THE ITALIAN MS SOCIETY (AISM)?

AISM is a non-profit organization which was founded in 1968 by Bianca Maria Merini (affected by MS) and her husband Giorgio Valente and a small group of people with MS, doctors, relatives and social workers.

They wanted to found AISM to find out something more about multiple sclerosis that was pretty unknown at that time.

The Italian MS society promotes and supports innovative research with the aim of improving therapies, and provide support to the life of people with MS and find a cure for the disease.

In addition, AISM has a Foundation called FISM. This Foundation plays a paramount role nationally and internationally. Indeed, it promotes scientific research of excellence to have an impact on people with MS.

AISM fights for the Right of people with multiple sclerosis. Indeed they want them to have access to reliable and precise information.

They want the Right to accurate information and a Right to health and full quality life.

WHAT IS MULTIPLE SCLEROSIS?

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a disabling chronic unpredictable disease of the central nervous system.

In people who have MS the immune system attacks the myelin (a protective sheath that covers nerves), the cells which produce myelin and nerve fibers. This attack causes communication problems between the brain and the body.

In the world there are 2.8 million people struggling with MS and most of them are young.

Unfortunately there’s no cure for people who struggle with this disease yet, but there are therapies that slow down the progress of the devastating symptoms.

HOW CAN WE DONATE TO HELP THE RESEARCH?

There are many different ways to donate to AISM.

First of all because It guarantees the necessary care

to children to fight malnutrition.
The chronic malnutrition rate jumped from 30% in 2019 to 48% in 2021.
With the "Emergency Hunger Campaign" they launch an urgent appeal to save hundreds of thousands of children at risk of malnutrition.
The "Infant Food Safety Project" guarantees the supply of an integrated food safety package, food and nutritional subsistence interventions, with particular attention to pregnant women and newborns. 

Secondly because it guarantees the right to education

to all the children, without discrimination.
In fact, Save the children has launched the "Protect Children" campaign thanks to which, every day, in Italy and in the rest of the world, all children must be educated. Because protecting children now, means protecting a generation that is our future.

Finally because it defends the children

from all forms of exploitation and abuse.
They work to protect children and adolescents from all forms of exploitation by offering educational and professional opportunities, psychophysical support, protection and safety.
There are campaigns to stop the export of weapons to Yemen or for the release of children in prison.

I chose this charity because I think that the protection of children is fundamental in a civil society, children represent the future so we must support this organization to save humanity.

Wars, calamities and even Covid-19 negatively affected the condition of millions of children who therefore suffer from malnutrition and hunger.

Without adequate nutritious food, children cannot grow normally, it's unacceptable that someone could die of hunger and thirst!

The right to education is very important for full human development and growth, to fight poverty and marginalization. 

So many teenagers leave their studies so they destroy their dreams forever.

If we think that millions of children around the world are still victims of sexual abuse, child labor, child soldiers and mistreatment today we must stop and reflect!

In the first place, this Charity works with young people who are struggling with their mental health. Mental health is very important, especially for teenagers, because they are our world's future.

Secondly, Volunteers at “Heads Together” don't care about race and religion and they try to help everybody in their country regardless of their social-cultural background.

On top of that, given that people who have mental diseases feel embarrassed asking for help, this Charity encourages them to talk about their problems without worries and ask for help and support.

In 2016, The Royal Foundation launched Heads Together – a campaign spearheaded by The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and Prince Harry, The Duke of Sussex. Bringing together eight charity partners, the initiative built on the decades of work they have done to tackle stigma and change the conversation on mental health for everyone.

As the Charity of the Year for the 2017 Virgin Money London Marathon, Team Heads Together took to the streets for the first ever Mental Health Marathon. Hundreds of runners ran for the campaign, with thousands more wearing their Heads Together headbands – all to raise the profile of this important issue and inspire people to talk about their own mental health for the first time

Heads Together works in partnership with eight mental health charities, they would request the selection of one of their partner charities.

First of all Greenpeace is a worldwide organization that works to protect all the environment from the main issues like fighting global warming, saving the Arctic and living toxic-free. 

They raise money to restore forests destroyed by fire or human actions, for example the Amazon rainforest or the woods in Russia and Canada.

Secondly Greenpeace sets very realistic goals, they care about issues in the ecosystem which maybe only few people notice, for example reducing the petrol in the Argentinian sea or protecting west African fishing communities. Have you ever heard about these issues in the news?

On top of that, Greenpeace works all over the world and in their website they have a section for each country, with a lot of news about issues in that specific area.

In 1971 a boat sailed from Vancouver with the aim of  preventing the explosion of a nuclear bomb in Amchitka. On board there were also journalists, to document the event. At first the protest group was called “Don’t create the wave” but then, the boat was given the name of “Greenpeace”

They don’t accept funds from governments and corporations, instead they rely on your goodwill and generosity. This makes them extremely independent and able to act against any corporation without fear of their funding being cut off.

Their website gives instructions on how to donate and not only that, they give you reasons why you should donate.

Hello everyone, today I'm going to talk about a famous, important  and extremely active charity called “Emergency”.

I chose this  Nonprofit  Organisation first of all because I think that this association is doing amazing work in poor countries such as Afghanistan, which  are undergoing the terrible experience of  civil war. 

Secondly, I decided to choose this Nonprofit Organisation because  the many volunteers who work for it are doctors and they  never care about who  the people are, but they care about  health and well being. For example, they help soldiers who   get injured during war actions… I think that in this way you can make  aggressive people change  their mind towards warfare.

On top of that, I chose to do some research work on “Emergency” because  Gino STrada and all the volunteer doctors  don’t earn any money, but they  devote all  their time to the victims of wars and this, in my opinion, is more important than the money.

The founders of Emergency are Gino Strada and his wife Teresa Sarti. 

Let me tell you something about them.

Gino Strada was born on 21 April 1948 in Sesto San Giovanni, a town near Milan. Gino Strada, before opening this charity, had worked as a doctor at a hospital in RHO, near Milan. He had also worked as a surgeon with the Red Cross. On 15th May 1994 he decided to create this association called Emergency. Gino Strada also wrote two books:

Teresa Sarti, Gino Strada’s wife, worked as a teacher in middle and high schools,  however she died in 2009 of cancer, unfortunately.

‘Emergency’ is a non-profit organization that helps people undergoing the experience of war, such as children, pregnant women and elderly people, but also injured soldiers. 

‘Emergency’ has only one goal that isto offer free and high-quality medical and surgical care to the victims of war.

This association doesn't work only in Afghanistan, but also in Italy. It has around 160 groups linked to Emergency with four thousand volunteers. These volunteers are invited by teachers and parents and often go to schools to give talks about problems in poor and war countries.
