What is an archetypal hero? by Ms. Walker

Define in your own words what an archetypal hero is. Next, find an example of an archetypal hero in history and one in media (i.e. book, movie, television show etc.). What is one common/similar trait they both have and why does that trait make them a archetypal hero?
Wait for your peers to post and read at least two people’s definition and examples and comment on whether you agree or disagree with them and why. Make sure to put both your name and the student your responding to name in the title.

An archetypal hero is a character who exhibits certain characteristics and qualities. These characteristics and qualities are universal, meaning know matter what religion or ethnicity you are it is all the same for everyone and denotes a certain pattern.
A archetypal hero in history I feel is Joan of Arc.
A archetypal hero in media (book) I feel is Katniss Everdeen from The Hunger Games series.
Both women exhibit qualities of leadership, able to lead the charge and people to change events or ideas in a particular time period. Both were strong physically and showed great strength and determination to their cause. Finally, both ladies were willing to die for their cause because they felt there cause was greater then their life. Both women were willing sacrifice themselves physically and mentally which I feel are qualities of an archetypal hero.

An archetype hero is a character whose actions or situation represents particular traits in human nature or specific characteristics.
One example in history is Queen Elizabeth I. She united her people in a world that was divided by religious conflict. She proved that any women could rule just as much as a man and had a very successful tenure. She took great care in her public image. She also knew when to fight and when to stand down which are important traits for a ruler. A character who showed these qualities was Katiness Everdeen in the Hunger Games movie. She united her people in district twelve. She lead the people just was well as any male character and united the people against Panem. Katiness also knew when to give in to not hurt more people and when to stay and fight. Both of these women showed true archetypal character qualities.

Patrick Miller
I totally agree with your definition of archetypal hero, these characteristics definitely have special qualities that are universal in the texts we read in school, for fun, movies, television shows etc. I think it is funny that we both used the same media character Katiness Everdeen. She definitely is a strong leader along with your historical character Joan of Arc. I think you chose two examples that really show the archetypal hero through their leadership abilities and skills. Also, the love and kindness for their people and their well being with caused people to follow them because they thought of others and wanted what was best for them.

Hope Miller

Hello Hope,

Your definition of archetypal character is very similar to mine. I agree that these characters have special qualities and that they are universal through out history. Queen Elizabeth I was a fantastic example of an archetypal hero. She truly lead the Golden Age for England because of her leadership, her love of her people, her wit and smarts, and her cunning on the battlefield. Katniss Everdeen also displayed similar characteristics by her strong leadership, the people who she lead loved her, and she was also very smart on the battlefield. Both of these examples are excellent examples of archetypal hero.

Patrick
