         <description><![CDATA[<div><strong>Kan'ami (1333-1408):</strong><br>Actor/playwright of an artistic acting troupe. Performed for Ashikage Yoshimitsu (shogun, 1358-1408), who liked their performance so much that he sent Kan'ami's son, Zeami, to study acting educationally. <br><strong>Zeami (1363-1443):<br></strong>Son of Kan'ami, was sent away to study theatre at 11 years old, took over his father's place as the leader of the troupe and performed for the shogun. Rewrote and revised Kan'ami's plays and established theory and philosophy based off of Zen teachings. <br>Yūgen: mysterious inner heart or spirit behind outward form <br>Height of acting troupe at 1408, but then removed from the court when Yoshimitsu (the shogun, his friend) passed away later in the year. He performed until 1422 and gave his troupe to his son to become a Buddhist monk.He became a court musician in 1424, but his nephew took over that role in 1429. He was exiled to Sado in 1435 for <strong>political reasons, </strong>returned to Kyoto in 1438, and died in 1443.&nbsp;<br><br></div>]]></description>
