so a long time before Ariel was born, Ursula was this amazing opera singer that everyone in the kingdom fancied. Ursula also came from nobility as her family was known to have magical powers that can be used for the good. it was Ursula's dream to be this great opera singer and she really was great up and she knew it. This lead her to be a little too boastful and confident, that the more she used her voice, the weaker it got, and eventually straining her voice to the point where she couldn't sing.

depression

the only thing Ursula truly knew how to do was sing, and losing this ability put her into a depression. this depression soon turned into envy and rage as her sadness channeled into anger for the people that she was once close to, but had now isolated her. the minute she lost her ability to sing, she lost most of her friends in the kingdom as she wasn't the kindest to the other mermaids, and without her special talent, they didn't see a reason to be friends with her anymore, so they cut her off.

her lair

her depression and isolation from the rest of the mermaids in the kingdom led her to isolate herself from society, so after months of planning, she left home and with nothing but a book of spells and traveled to the depths of the ocean, far, far, away from the rest of the kingdom. when she swam deep enough that you couldn't even see the sun shine, she found this little nook hidden between a structure of rocks and turned it into her new home.

in the lair

while down there, her isolation led her down a dark rabbit hole. she was truly cut off from the rest of the kingdom, and for a while she was sad, but she channeled that sadness into learning the spells from the book that she had brought down with her. eventually, other sea creatures would stumble upon her lair, all curious about the first and only mermaid who had the guts to swim into the darkest parts of the ocean. upon meeting ursula, it was her charm that lead all of the creatures to befriend her which gave her a sense of peace in this new world.

her tail

on one of the nights where she was practicing her spells in her spell book, she was trying out a new spell on one of the the fishies that had swam a little too far away from their pack. (she would take creatures that looked lost back to her lair for her to practice her spells) one of the spells, she was trying to replace the tail of the fish to octopus tentacles, and it went very wrong. The spell ricochet off of her walls, and instead hit her. she was knocked out cold for a couple days, and when she woke up, she woke up to tentacles in replacement for her tail. this sent her into a frenzy as she was scared of the monster that she had become. but as time passed, as she was teaching herself how to move around, she realized that she liked this new version of herself, allowing herself to keep this new look.

the first mermaid who swam too far

years after ursula had first left home, she started growing powerful, memorizing all of the spells in her spell book, and taking her vengeance out on random sea creatures that stumbled across her lair. stories of her power had started reaching the kingdom from other fishies, and the curiosity of young impressionable mermaids grew. word got back to king triton, and he forbade mermaids from swimming too deep into the ocean, but one mermaid didn't listen. she swam in hopes to finding ursula, and when she did, ursula casted a spell to capture her voice so that the mermaid couldn't warn any of the other mermaids or tell them what she saw. when the mermaid got back, she tried her best to tell the rest of the kingdom of what she saw, but couldn't without a voice.

time passing

over the years, many mermaids swam down to see ursula, and all who went down, came back to the kingdom with no voice. ursula now had a library full of the voices of mermaids that she could use to her own benefit. while most of the time she would use the voices to attract more sea creatures, and try to mess with the human sailors above water, ursula was just looking for a voice that sounded like her own before she strained it. no matter how many healing spells she casted, ursual was never able to get her voice back to what it once was so she was just looking for one voice, a voice that resembled hers so that she could have her voice back. she had the spell all memorized and mastered, she was just waiting for that one voice to come.

Ariel finding ursula

when Ariel finally went to meet Ursula so that she can live the human life, ursula realized that Ariel's voice best resembled her own before she strained it. so ursula took Ariel's voice in exchange for Ariel having human legs, and being able to live on land. when ursula was finally able to replace her voice with Ariel's she was elated, she was finally able to sing like how she sang before her injury.

epiphany

while Ursula finally got her voice back, she looked in the mirror and didn't recognize herself. she thought that she would be able to return back to her former glory, but that didn't happen, because when she looked in the mirror, all she saw was an older version of herself, who now looked like a monster, which sent her into a spiral.
