Stalin started these collectives as an excuse to destroy the kulaks, who believed in private ownership, not communism. He needed a surplus of food to sell overseas to bring money to the country. Stalin blamed the kulaks and declared war on them executing them and getting their land eventually they gained 90%of the farm land in Russia.
