16 In the towns of these people, however, which YHWH your God is giving you as an estate, you shall let no breathing creature live. 17 No, you shall surely put them under herem ('the ban') the Hittites and the Amorites, the Canaanites and the Perizzites, the Hivites and the Jebusites--as YHWH your God has commanded you, 18 lest they lead you into doing all the abhorrent things that they have done for their gods and you stand guilty before YHWH your God.

For other towns: 10 “When you draw near to a town to fight against it, offer it terms of peace. 11 If it accepts your terms of peace and surrenders to you, then all the people in it shall serve you at forced labor. 12 But if it does not accept your terms of peace and makes war against you, then you shall besiege it, 13 and when the Lord your God gives it into your hand, you shall put all its males to the sword. 14 You may, however, take as your plunder the women, the children, livestock, and everything else in the town, all its spoil. You may enjoy the spoil of your enemies, which the Lord your God has given you. 15 Thus you shall treat all the towns that are very far from you, which are not towns of these nations here.

"God made wild animals of every kind and cattle of every kind and al kinds of creeping things of the earth. And God saw that this was good. And God said, 'Let us make ahdam in our image, after our likeness. They shall rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, the cattle, the whole earth, and all the creeping things that creep on the earth.' And God created the adham in his image, in the image of God he created him; male and female he created them.
Should Biblical Themes be used for liberation/resistance?

Renita Weems would want us to believe that we have learned to read the text in a different way, but our hymnody from "I'm Bound for the Promised Land" to "Joshua Fit de Battle" belie that belief. Sermons by Black clergy who invoke us to be like Caleb and Joshua expose us for falling into the trap laid out in Warrior's seminal work. They also call us to account for not taking our own story more seriously, for if the truth were told, we of the African Diaspora have a story much more akin to that of the Canaanites, Moabites, Edomites, Ammonites, and Philistines. But somehow, we find our own stories so painful that we fantasize that we are of the "winner" group, that we are engrafted into Abraham's seed as Paul told the Gentiles of Galacia (3:6). So too, we have fallen for this rhetoric possibly to escape our own painful story and possibly to conjure up the god of the oppressor to work for us. -- Randall Bailey, "He Didn't Tell Us the Worst of It" (2005)

Substantial portions of the Bible describe a world where the oppressed are liberated, the last become first, the humbled are exalted, the despised are preferred, those rejected are welcomed, the long- suffering are rewarded, the dispossessed are repossessed, and the arrogant are prostrated. And these are the passages, for oppressed readers, that stand at the center of the biblical message and, thereby, serve as a vital norm for biblical faith. Therein is a portrait of a God that oppressed readers can believe in. In the process of the Bible’s description of an ethic of divine reversal, some of those who will be abased may be African or women, and the overthrow of the proud may seem to come about only through more violence, but these factors pale in the face of the overall promise of liberation. The fact that these factors are suppressed in the reading process says more about the depth of human yearning for freedom than it does about any lack of sophistication on the part of the readers. - Renita Weems, "Reading Her Way Through the Struggle" (1991).

21 Jesus left that place and went away to the district of Tyre and Sidon. 22 Just then a Canaanite woman from that region came out and started shouting, “Have mercy on me, Lord, Son of David; my daughter is tormented by a demon.” 23 But he did not answer her at all. And his disciples came and urged him, saying, “Send her away, for she keeps shouting after us.” 24 He answered, “I was sent only to the lost sheep of the house of Israel.” 25 But she came and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, help me.” 26 He answered, “It is not fair to take the children’s food and throw it to the dogs.” 27 She said, “Yes, Lord, yet even the dogs eat the crumbs that fall from their masters’[f] table.” 28 Then Jesus answered her, “Woman, great is your faith!

While they were at Hazeroth, Miriam and Aaron spoke against Moses because of the Cushite woman whom he had married (for he had indeed married a Cushite woman), 2 and they said, “Has the Lord spoken only through Moses? Has he not spoken through us also?” And the Lord heard it. 3 Now the man Moses was very humble, more so than anyone else on the face of the earth. 4 Suddenly the Lord said to Moses, Aaron, and Miriam, “Come out, you three, to the tent of meeting.” So the three of them came out. 5 Then the Lord came down in a pillar of cloud and stood at the entrance of the tent and called Aaron and Miriam, and they both came forward. 6 And he said, “Hear my words:

When there are prophets among you,

    I the Lord make myself known to them in visions;

    I speak to them in dreams.

Not so with my servant Moses;

    he is faithful in all my house.

With him I speak face to face—clearly, not in riddles,

    and he beholds the form of the Lord.

“Why then were you not afraid to speak against my servant Moses?” 9 And the anger of the Lord was kindled against them, and he departed.

10 When the cloud went away from over the tent, Miriam’s skin had become diseased, as white as snow. And Aaron turned toward Miriam and saw that she was diseased. 11 Then Aaron said to Moses, “Oh, my lord, do not punish us for a sin that we have so foolishly committed. 12 Do not let her be like one stillborn, whose flesh is half consumed when it comes out of its mother’s womb.” 13 And Moses cried to the Lord, saying, “O God, please heal her.” 14 But the Lord said to Moses, “If her father had but spit in her face, would she not bear her shame for seven days? Let her be shut out of the camp for seven days, and after that she may be brought in again.” 15 So Miriam was shut out of the camp for seven days.
