How does the setting affect readers of the text?

The setting provided by the author and text makes the reader ponder social "norms" and social dynamics that take a large part in our society, especially in school. Through key details the reader is able to determine that Rachel largely feels unwanted, neglected, and shut out at school. Rachel blames this mainly on "stupid" Sylvia Sylvester who is accepted by both the teacher and her class, is heard and is acknowledged. This is proven when the teacher is trying to figure who the red sweater belongs to and Rachel tells the teacher quietly but clearly it is not hers and is ignored while Sylvia telling the teacher that it is hers and is heard and acknowledged.

Rachel feels like an outcast. Even on her birthday, she feels ignored and neglected. By the end of the day, rachel feels like she wants her birthday to be over. Nobody listens to her and she feels shut out and completely ignored even on her birthday. When the incident with the red sweater occurs it may seem to an outsider that it isn't a big deal and she should simply take. However, to her it is a big deal. It's more than simply accepting the sweater, it's about being truly seen and heard especially on her birthday. She begins to dream about when she will be able to go home "There’s a cake Mama’s making for tonight and when Papa comes home from work we’ll eat it.There’ll be candles and presents and everybody will sing Happy birthday, happy birthday to you, Rachel, only it’s too late."

The order that the events take place in the story allow for reader to connect with the setting, characters and story in general. The order in which the sequence of events occurred created a environment in which in the beginning of the story Rachel isn't sure how she feels about being elven, towards the middle she feels very alone and wishes she could simply go home. Towards the end, she wishes it wasn't her birthday at all and that "[she] was anything but eleven. Because I want today to be far away already, far away like a runaway balloon, like a tiny o in the sky, so tiny—tiny you have to close
your eyes to see it. "
