A simile is a figure of speech in which a comparison between two things is made using like or as. In Macbeth act 2 Shakespeare wrote "A heavy summons lies like lead upon me". In this Banquo is describing how tired he is by explaining his sleepiness, or heavy summons, as heavy like lead.

An expression designed to call something to mind without mentioning it explicitly; an indirect or passing reference. In Macbeth Act 2 after Macbeth killed Duncan and was washing the blood off of his hands, Shakespeare wrote " Will all great Neptune's ocean wash thus blood from my clean hand?" When Shakespeare wrote of Neptune's ocean he was creating an allusion to Greek mythology. Neptune is the god of the sea in Greek mythology.

Hubris is when a character shows confidence or arrogance that eventually leads to the downfall of the character. An example of hubris from Macbeth act 2 is when Shakespeare wrote "Why, worthy thane, You do unbend your noble strength, to think So brain sickly of things." This statement from Lady Macbeth emphasizes her over confidence by her being negative towards Macbeth for worrying about being caught after murdering Duncan.
