Mini Lessons are explicit and focused lessons that I create to demonstrate a particular skill or strategy to my students. The demonstrations are planned according to the needs of the class as a whole. This supports the student's development as writers because it is a great tool to teach students critical skills and particular content for their success in writing. Mini lessons are a fun and exciting way to teach new strategies for my writers, and they love it!

In our classroom, we love independent writing time! During independent writing, students choose their own topics and apply their knowledge of the writing process to their work. Since my student's writing is at all different stages, they know how to use other resources such as editing checklists and writing charts that can guide them as well. Independent writing time gives my students the opportunity to write freely, and use their creativity and imagination and put it in their writing!

They can read each other their pieces of writing as a way to help each other make their writing stronger. Partner time is another way for students to gain confidence in their writing and see themselves as writers!

In shared writing, students have the opportunity to share the writing they have been working on. Students can read aloud their writing to their classmates at the end of the day and share anything new that they have learned that we worked on! When students share their writing with their classmates, it can give students more confidence in their writing, and as a writer overall. My students truly look forward to sharing their writing in front of their peers, and it gives them the motivation to really try their best when they write!

Why Writing Workshop in Preschool?

The process of writing workshop gives students the power and freedom to make decisions about their writing and most importantly, express themselves through their writing. In our classroom, writing workshop is focused on the child and who they are as a writer. In writing workshop, it gives students the opportunity to experiment with new writing strategies and try out new skills. Writing workshop in our classroom is seen as a time to grow as a writer, instead of overly focusing on doing a new skill correctly. Starting the process of writing workshop as early as preschool gives students the chance to begin their writing experience!

References:
(Article I researched) King, K. A. (2012).

During the mini lesson of writers workshop, I am able to focus on certain strategies and differentiate between the students and their strengths and weaknesses. Here is an example of how a teacher used a mini lesson to help her kindergartners understand writing sentences, which could even be a mini lesson here in our preschool classroom!

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q0KTbVsfkM8

Listed below are the components of language arts instruction. Each of these are incorporated through writing workshop because the student participates in each of these components. Each of these components of language arts instruction serve as a great tool to develop student's writing during writing workshop!

Reading: Students can read during the writing workshop when they read over their writing piece.
Writing: There is so much writing in the writing workshop! Students write when they pre-write their piece, draft, revise, and edit!
Speaking: This is when students communicate ideas through their language. They can talk about their ideas for their writing with their peers as well as the teacher!
Listening: Students use listening during the writing workshop when sharing their pieces with classmates and listening to other student's writing!
Viewing: This can consist of looking at another student’s writing and understanding why they wrote what they did.
Visual Representing: This can involve dramatic acting about a topic students are discussing in their language arts instruction and writing, or even something as simple as drawing a picture. We love exploring the different ways to convey our writing!
