Maths in everyday life by Teacher Academy

Take a picture of something that would be in your students' surrounding or everyday life and briefly explain how you could use it to start out a lesson on a certain Maths topic. Share the picture and description on your Learning Diary and here on the Padlet. If you prefer you can also take a picture from the internet that might show something you would find in your students' surrounding (please make sure you have sharing rights for the picture).

These are some of the workshop images on symmetries that my class with a third (16 years-old) we realized within "BergamoScienza 2016". A really exciting experience for me but especially for the guys!
The workshop aims at stimulating children to watch symmetries around them: in nature, in art, in everyday objects, in letters and in geometric figures. Divided in small groups, the participants are encouraged to spot line, point and rotational symmetries by using mirrors and sheets of paper.
Mirrors are especially suitable for a playful approach, as they can be used as an axis of symmetry creating simple reflections, or to complete partially drawn figures. With two incident mirrors, the number of reflected images depends on the angle they form; with more mirrors you can make simple optical machines that create astonishing images. Symmetries can also be observed by folding and colouring paper to make flexagons.

Once it was the public library and every student studied at its side.
After showing only the picture on the right, I would ask them: what can you see? is there any geometrical figure? great part of them would answer they can see cubes. Can you calculate the area on the floor occupied by each cube if I only give you one the size of one segment? At first they would answer they can't. Later I will show them the other figure and make them think about what they can know about angles; they would easily get that each rhombus is made up of 2 equilateral triangles and so it is possible to calculate almost everything.

What does math have to do with home decorating? In order to figure out what you'll spend, you first have to know what you need. Understanding some basic geometry can help you.
Figuring area: Squares and rectangles

Imagine you're planning to buy new carpeting for your home. You're going to put down carpeting in the living room, bedroom, and hallway, but not in the bathroom. You could try to guess at how much carpet you might need to cover these rooms, but you're better off figuring out exactly what you need. To determine how much carpet you'll need, you'll use this simple formula:

A = L x W

Or in other words, "area equals length times width." This formula is used to determine the area of a rectangle or square. In the floor plan below, all of the floor space (as well as the walls and ceilings) is made up of squares or rectangles, so this formula will work for figuring the area you need to carpet.

Start by figuring the total area of the floor plan. When you're done, you can deduct the area of the bathroom, since you don't want to carpet that room. To figure out the total area of the floor plan, you'll need to know the total length and width. The total length of the floor plan shown above is 12 feet plus 10 feet, or 22 feet. The total width is 7 feet plus 5 feet, or 12 feet. Plug these numbers into your equation to get the total area of the floor plan:

A = 22 feet x 12 feet
A = 264 square feet
The total area of your floor plan is 264 square feet. Now you need to figure out the area of the bathroom so you can deduct it from the total area. The bathroom is 7 feet long and 5 feet wide, so it has an area of 35 square feet. Deducting the area of the bathroom from the total area (264 minus 35) leaves you with 229 square feet to carpet.

Maths in everyday life

More math can be found in the kitchen than anywhere else in the house. Cooking and baking are sciences all their own and can be some of the most rewarding (and delicious) ways of introducing children to mathematics. After all, recipes are really just mathematical algorithms or self-contained step-by-step sets of operations to be performed. The proof is in the pudding!

Working in the kitchen requires a wide range of mathematical knowledge, including but not limited to:

measuring ingredients to follow a recipe

multiplying / dividing fractions to account for more or less than a single batch

converting a recipe from metric (mL) to US standard units (teaspoon, tablespoon, cups)

calculating cooking time per each item and adjusting accordingly

calculating pounds per hour of required cooking time

understanding ratios and proportions, particularly in baking (ex. the recipe calls for 1 egg and 2 cups of flour, then the ratio of eggs to flour is 1:2).

Following a recipe can sometimes be tricky, especially if conversions are necessary. We Americans follow our own set of rules when it comes to most forms of measurement. Conversions make it a bit more difficult to follow recipes from other countries as they most likely use Celsius and the metric system.

Ingredienti per una tortiera da 24 cm:

700 gr di mele

3 uova

70 gr di burro

300 gr di farina 00

250 gr di zucchero

1 bicchiere di latte

1 limone

1 bustina di lievito per dolci

Lisbon tours are traditionally paved with small blocks of limestone, basalt and other materials. The knapsacks take advantage of the limestone diameters system, with the aid of a hammer, to make small adjustments in the shape of the stone. Diaclases occur in all types of rocks, particularly hard rocks, and are no more than fractures along which there was no considerable movement. These fractures are formed by rupture as a result of a stress field applied to the rock material. They intersect in several directions, some of them leading to a network of fractures that facilitates the separation of the rock into blocks.
Knitters use molds to mark zones of different colors, repeating these motifs in a linear sequence (friezes) or in the two dimensions of the plane (patterns). The geometry of the XX century proves that there are a limited number of possible symmetries in the plane: 7 for the friezes and 17 for the patterns. A study of young Portuguese students, encouraged by the Portuguese Society of Mathematics (www.spm.pt), registered 5 types of friezes and 11 types of patterns on the Lisbon sidewalks. A project is underway between the Municipal chamber ofLisbon and the Portuguese Society of Mathematics, which aims to increase the geometric richness of the Lisbon sidewalk, completing it with the missing types of symmetries.
Step on the math and have fun discovering the symmetry of the rides you tread.
