Practical Advice: Grace Williams, Jack Arnone

Uncertainty Reduction Theory:

Due to Riley being a senior, you are naturally going to have an increased uncertainty. So, in order to reduce uncertainty you may try to find things out or get to know him to reduce uncertainty. As far as incentives, when starting out at school you’re going to want to develop friendships. Another incentive would be that you want your living situation to be as healthy as possible. As far as future interaction you will see your roommate every day so it’s beneficial to keep a healthy relationship.

Social Penetration Theory:

When you first meet Riley all your conversations will be surface-level. Ideally, as time goes on and you get to know Riley you will move towards deeper levels in the onion. This will not only increase breadth but also depth which will equally increase a relationship. In the future in order to keep that strong relationship with Riley it’s in your best interest to keep penetrating the onion. It is important to know that when you first meet there will be a lot of breadth but not as much depth.

Expectancy Violations Theory:

When you meet Riley you immediately ask him to go to lunch. This will be violating the norm but will result in a stronger relationship at the start. In the future, you may still want to violate expectations but being cautious and careful is key as you don’t want to cause any harm to the roommate relationship.
