Lesson: Adding and subtracting

Warm up: I will engage their interest by showing a music video about addition and subtraction

I Do: I will demonstrate how to add and subtract using a variety of balls. To do this I will hand some kids a few balls and either give them more or take away some so they understand the principle and can visually see how many are left after.

You Do: The students will split up into groups and have different activities to practice this. One activity can be tossing the balls into a bucket that has a sign saying the number of balls in order to figure out how to add two numbers separately. Another can be rolling them to one another while in a circle. I will also try to do an activity where they have to play steal the bacon with the balls to try and solve an equation related to addition and subtraction.

Closure: Students can summarize what they learned by showing with the balls how to do a simple math problem. This involves counting and sorting as well. Or they can verbally explain if that is easier.
