Yankee Stadium had its years of first in the 1950s. Exactly two years after his Yankee debut, Mickey Mantle hit what is recognized as the game's first "tape-measure" home run, a 565-foot clout off the Senators' Chuck Stobbs at Washington's Griffith Stadium. In 1953 The Yankees won a record 5th consecutive World Championship. 3 years later in 1956 Don Larsen had the only perfect game in World Series History. April 18th,1958 the Brooklyn Dodgers made their first appearance as the resident team of Los Angeles at the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum. They did so in front of a crowd of 78,672. On this day the Dodgers took on the San Francisco Giants, winning 6-5. Despite their move to the west coast, in their first season, the Dodgers attracted over 1.85 million fans and dominated the National League, winning five pennants in the years 1952, 1953, 1955, 1956, 1959 and two World Championships in 1955 and 1959. In 1956, Pirate first baseman Dale Long hit home runs in a record eight straight games between May 19th and May 28th (that mark was matched by Don Mattingly in 1987 and Ken Griffey Jr. in 1993). Three years later, Harvey Haddix hurled what many consider the greatest game ever pitched when he retired 36 straight Milwaukee Braves hitters over 12 innings on May 26, 1959. The same year, ElRoy Face won 17 straight games in relief. Though the Pirates failed to finish higher than seventh from 1950 through 1957, the foundation for another championship was being put into place. Standout players were added throughout the decade, including 2001 Hall-of-Fame inductee Bill Mazeroski, Dick Groat, Vernon Law, Bob Friend, Bill Virdon, Face and Hall-of-Fame right fielder Roberto Clemente. In 1956, Pirate owner John Galbreath hired Joe L. Brown as general manager. With the club languishing in last place at 36-67 midway through the 1957 campaign, Brown promoted coach Danny Murtaugh to field manager. Within three seasons, the Bucs were again champions of the National League and again matched against the powerful New York Yankees in the World Series. The arrival of Negro players and the upturn in the team’s fortunes in 1951 increased attendance to levels over a million from 1951 to 1965 annually with the exception of 1958. Bill Veeck, whose control of the team coincided with the 1959 pennant, promoted attendance with his usual avidity, and wrought several changes in the park. Believing strongly that the park was a good structure, and in a neighborhood far better than its reputation indicated, Veeck painted the park white — obscuring Davis’s green brick, alas — knocked the bricks out of the left field wall to provide a picnic area with a view of the game, end installed the famous exploding elements on an electric scoreboard installed by the Comiskey management in 1951.
In 1959, after 40-year absence the World Series returns to Comiskey Park as the Sox win their first pennant since 1919. In the 1960s the Rose Bowl was home of the Rose Bowl Games. The Games were college football games held every year on New Year's Day. The game got a lot of attention every year and was one of the biggest college football games of the year. Some of the best games were in 1961 when Caltech students changed the Minnesota card stunt to say Caltech instead of Huskies which brought amusement to the 30 million television viewers. Other games were the '63 game against USC and Wisconsin. '64 Illinois vs. Washington. '65 USC vs. Indiana, and many more. The stadium could hold 100,000 to 102,000 people which was why it was home to many important games and events. Lambeau Field, Lombardi Avenue, Green Bay, WI

Lambeau Field got its name in 1965 after the death of the Green Bay Packers founder and Head Coach Curly Lambeau. During the 60s the stadium grew from 32,000 seats to 50,000 seats. The most iconic game held at the stadium was the Championship game in 1967 between the Packers and the Cowboys on December 31st. The game was called the Ice Bowl when the temperature was -13 degrees and a wind chill of -48 degrees. It is now the second oldest NFL Stadium still running. The 5th stop of the trip is down in Chicago Illinois at Soldier Field.

In 1951, the Red Sox celebrated the franchise's 50th anniversary and honored members of the 1901 Boston Americans in May. In 1952, Ted Williams was recalled to active duty and bid the Fenway Park crowd farewell on April 30, 1952. Though Williams would return to the team after serving in the Korean War, many at the ballpark that day thought it was the star's last game. In July of 1953, Ted Williams returned from combat and played in 37 games for the Red Sox in the second half of the season. In the fall, Boston College football once again took to the Fenway Park field. The 1959 Red Sox had a losing record for the first time in five years, but the club made positive strides when it integrated its roster in August by calling up infielder Pumpsie Green. Solider Field held many different events throughout the 60s. The Chicago Bears would occasionally play at the stadium before they made it their home in 1971. The stadium held the Chicago College All-Star Games when college teams played against NFL Teams. In 1963 the All-Stars defeated the Packers 20-17 making it the last time an All-Star team ever defeated an NFL team. The stadium also hosted other events such as International Soccer games. It also hosted the Army-Air Force game in 1963. In 1968 the first Special Olympics was held at the stadium where over 1,000 children with intellectual disabilities participated. The last historical stop on this road trip is in Philadelphia at Franklin Field!

Franklin Field was the home of the University of Pennsylvania Quakers during the 60s. The Philadelphia Eagles played at the stadium from 1958 to 1970. The stadium held more than 60,000 people. The most iconic game played at the stadium was the 1960 NFL Championship Game. The Eagles defeated the Packers 17-13. There were 67,325 spectators in attendance and it was Lombardi's only playoff loss which makes the game even more important. It also hosted the Track and Field invitational Penn Relays. In 1969 the stadium was the first to install AstroTurf instead of natural grass. That is the end of the Gameday Gateway Road trip! Now time to go back to Seneca Valley!

Here is your first interest stop! Balboa island is a little island off of Irvine California. This island used to be a home to my great grandparents before my great grandpa sold the house after his wife had passed away. This island holds a special place in my heart as every summer we went down as a family to celebrate my birthday and my great grandpa's birthday. He has lived to be 104, and we were so blessed to be able to bring him down to the island for a week every summer and let him relive some of his fondest memories. Staying in California your next stop will be the Los Angeles Memorial Coliseum, home of the Dodgers.

The Dallas Cowboys played at Cotton Bowl Stadium from 1960 to 1971 in Dallas Texas. It was known for hosting the annual Cotton Bowl and was home to the Dallas Texans from 1960 to 1962 and hosted the Red River Showdown. It could hold 75,000 people. In 1963 it hosted JFK's Final Public speech on November 22nd. It also hosted many concerts including Elvis Presley and The Beatles. In 1960 the 24th Cotton Bowl was played between Syracuse Orangemen and Texas Longhorns. In 1966 the NFL Championship game was held between the Packers and the Cowboys with the Cowboys winning 34-27. Welcome to Colorado Springs the second interest stop on the trip! Colorado Springs is around two hours from Denver, Colorado and is home to many different attractions. My Aunt and Uncle live in Colorado Springs, and I love to go visit in the summer and hike different mountains! You can hike Eagle Peak which is on the Air Force Academy Base or walk the Incline stairs. Another great attraction is Garden of the Gods where you can see many different rock sculptures. It is also a great place to go to get fresh mountain air and to see many different animals! The 4th stop on the trip is in a historical stadium in Wisconsin at Lambeau Stadium.
