"But his eyes, dimmed a little by many paint-less days under sun and rain, broad on over the solemn dumping ground" (24).

In this chapter, the eyes of TJ Eckleburg are described as Tom and Nick enter the Valley of Ashes. The huge advert is said to be placed there by an oculist in order to boost his business. However, it seems that he "sank into eternal blindness" or forgotten them. The quote reflects how even if his eyes are dreary and dimmed, they still watch over the Valley of Ashes and its inhabitants.

Kent Nong

The eyes of TJ Eckleburg reflects the theme of Lies & Deceit, because they keep watch over the Valley of Ashes, as if some sort of omniscient higher being. On page 160, when mourning over his dead wife, Wilson looks out the window of which his wife had seen the car from and says to Michaelis, "And I said..."You can fool me but you can't fool God!" (159). Significantly, Michaelis realizes Wilson was referring to the, "eyes of Doctor T. J. Eckleburg, which had just emerged, pale and enormous, from the dissolving night," (160).

Kent Nong

Myrtle's affair with Tom behind her husband's back is an example of the theme of Lies and Deceit, as well as Gatsby lying about his background.

As one can infer, Myrtle and Tom having affairs behind their spouses' backs are a representation of the theme of Lies and Deceit. Ultimately, the lies and deceit within the affairs causes Daisy to murder Myrtle and George to kill Gatsby. A one for one trade in a love affair. Metaphorically, both Myrtle and Tom represent the symbol of T.J. Eckleburg's spectacles. In light of the idea of the eyes of Eckleburg being the eyes of god showcased by Wilson, Tom and Myrtle both showcase the guilty pleasures and wrong doings that a divinity would look down upon and rule judgement.

Nathan Bui
