Don't use slip at all for the most part. Next time if I did to slip use white first then colored slip. Use color glaze instead to make ceramic pop more.

Sun & Moon Mugs: Made with a dark clay body. Painted with an orange and blue slip. Decorated with the sgraffito technique. Both mugs were dipped into transparent glaze (inside and outside).

Final results: Both mugs came out just like I imagined. I love the contrast of the bright orange sun next to the dark blue moon.

If I was able to redo this project I would let the moon mug get to the leather hard stage BEFORE going in with the sgraffito technique to keep all the details (like I did with the sun).

This was my testing glaze, it turned out very nice, the interior that you see here is navy blue glaze, i poured.

Daisy Farmer

Daisy Farmer is made with LB Blend, decorated with yellow slip on the hat, collar, and bowtie; blue peacock slip on the back of the head; and porcelain slip for clouds on the head and the whites of the eyes. Sgraffito was used to create decoration in the slip.

The texture is predominantly smooth, with some variation in the bowtie and hat to differentiate the clothing texture from the smoother, more regular skin texture.

No glaze was used on the inside of the piece, as the holes for daisies (or other flowers) in the hat and pupils are small.

The exterior glaze is a transparent Celadon, dipped. This glaze color choice was intended to be harmonious with the peacock blue and yellow slips it would cover.

While the sgraffito star-like shapes in the yellow slip and the sgraffito “bloodshot” veins in the porcelain slip remained clear and bold after glazing, the delicate tree sgraffito (inspired by Rocky Mann’s work) in the peacock blue slip nearly disappears after glazing.

I believe that the glaze was applied slightly thicker than optimal, as a result of difficulty with dipping the piece (I was holding the piece upright at first, and the pool of glaze was not deep enough to accommodate, so I had to readjust the grip, resulting in a longer than ideal dip). A faster dip, or a painted glaze, might have resulted in more transparency, and thus less obfuscation of the slip colors and sgraffito.

In addition, a matte glaze might have made the sgraffito and the contours of the piece easier to see.

Finally, a clear glaze might have allowed the slip colors to remain brighter.

I promise I’ll take a photo of it and post it on Tuesday! For now, have this image of my vase not glazed yet.

1) The surface turned out to be very smooth because of the glaze. I made some sgraffito designs of the Sun and stars on the surface of the vase and they didn’t leave any dips or bumps on the surface. Every really did just even itself out.

4) I poured the glaze into the cup then dumped it out, then I dipped it to coat the outside
5) Thankfully I have an image of my vase not glazed because what you see in the image is 100% not what I was expecting. It turned out to be darker than I thought and the designs are not that apparent now! The designs are still there, you just need to look closely at it to actually see them clearly.
6) Something I’d do next time is probably just sgraffito something, use the white opaque glaze, then design something over the sgraffito or freehand some designs using some of the oxides. If I had known my vase was gonna turn out to be that color because of the slip, I probably would have just used the opaque white glaze. Honestly thought, I still like it. It really look like an antique.

Project 1: Pinch Vase

I applied 3 coatings of brown slip on the vase. I did sgraffito. The motif is one bird resting on a plum tree and the other flying toward it, which means an overjoyed thing is happening. After the bisque fire, I found some defects; there were some cracks on the joints where I had attached 2 handles and some exploded holes on the body. The cracks may be caused by too thick of the brown slip I coated, and the exploded holes may be caused by air bubbles in the clay.
I poured Copper Red glaze on the interior.
In order to cover the flaws, I painted Tenmoku glaze on the body and Shanner glaze on the foot.
Poured glaze inside, and brushed glazes outside.
After the second fire, it turned out to be the one that I didn’t expect; the glaze on the surface looked not even, which might have been caused by brushing 3 layers of glaze.
If I could redo it, first, I would wedge the clay well and make sure no air bubbles in the clay to prevent the small exploded holes, and I wouldn't apply too thick of colored slip on the surface to avoid cracks. Second, I would dip the glaze instead of brushing.

The end result of the firing was a bit heavier in color than I expected, but instead added some nostalgic vintage color.

If I could do it all over again, I think I would make a correction in the glaze dipping step. This time I dipped the glaze so heavily that some of the design on the back of the vase wasn't fully emphasized.

Someone erased my first post and I was forced to do this on my break when I double checked my work.
1. Slip decorated with sgraffito

4. Dipped and painted (repair)
5. Green sgraffito turned almost black. White pretty much stayed white and the red interior turned several colors red, brown, and black mostly.
6. I would not have done the pink wax so high on the foot. It’s kinda rough at the bottom where the clay body is exposed. I would of also done the center of the clay body in all brown and the foot and lip of the vessel in white clay.

Used clear glaze inside & out, glazed via dipping. Surface has two colors of slip, then carved (so, sgraffito).

Glaze came out gorgeous -- shiny & transparent. I do think I'd make a thinner vase next time, were I to repeat this.

The exterior was Moonlight, the interior was supposed to look like Chun purple. Along with copper and rutile oxide. But it was odd on how it transferred. Rest assured the next bowl will look differently.

i poured K9 glaze in on the inside of my piece and swirled it around before pouring it out to make sure to fully coat the inside. brushed iron oxide on the outside of the piece and used a sponge to spread it all around.

honestly, overall, i liked the fact that this was my first piece, so i was able to expirement a little a learn. if i could redo the project, i would change the head or add more features to it so it wouldn’t look so much like the chocolate lady from spongebob.

I added white slip on brown clay for the sgraffito part. The inside and outside is the transparent glaze. For the inside I poured the glaze and swirled it around and dipped the outside carefully. I overall really liked the final result, the white slip on the transparent glaze made it look better than I thought and it fits the aesthetic I wanted it to have. The only thing I would change to this project is add more white slip since it seems a little thin in some areas.

This was carved with a tool and the inside glaze is a white glaze that was poured while the exterior glaze is moonlight and was dipped. The final results give the opportunity to interpret the piece in various ways - the reflection of the glaze could be interpreted as space or the ocean which i really like.

I would you change the lack of confidence i had with the carving knife because i want some of those lines to be cleaner

these are two identical small hand built vases. I used blue underglaze and clear glaze. I wished I would’ve applied a more even underglaze and made the walls of the vase thinner. These were dipped and have the clear glaze inside and out.
