Doyle's use of a metaphor in " It’s expensive to fly." reveals that living life at it's full potential is not free, but is granted by taking risks and hard work.

Doyle's use of Asyndeton in "So much held in a heart in a lifetime. So much held in a heart in a day, an hour, a moment." tells us the importance of experiences and treasuring those moments, because we never know when it is our last.

Doyle's use of a simile in "You can spend them slowly, like a tortoise and live to be two hundred years old, or you can spend them fast, like a hummingbird, and live to be two years old."  explains to the younger audience that we make decisions for ourselves and choose what to do with our "heartbeats."

Doyle's use of " their hearts hammering faster than we could clearly hear if we pressed our elephantine ears to their infinitesimal chests." shows the audience an example of what kind of creature uses every bit of it's energy in order to survive and live life to the fullest.
