Susan B. Anthony was initially an abolitionist in 1840 and over time became an advocate for the rights and equal treatment of women. Susan insisted that all men and women are created equal and that women should be able to have the same rights and privileges as men. She also believed that it was time to put an end to the classic “domestic housewife” cliche and let women do what they wanted to.

Women had been oppressed in a male dominated society throughout the 1830s and 40s. The first American Feminist Movement began as a result of women not tolerating the traditional restrictions accepted in society any longer. These restrictions clearly labeled men as the superior gender, and this movement created goals to end this status-quo.

The women in this movement wanted to make their voices heard. One of the most important goals in this movement was to gain the right to vote. Up until this point, the only opinion that mattered in politics and society was the voice of a man. Overall equality in society was also demanded by women: equal access to education, equality in marriage, and equal access to jobs was at the top of the list of changes women wanted.

Susan was raised in a traditional Quaker home and was incredibly smart and talented from a very young age. She went to a number of various schools including boarding school, district school and even a school run by her father. She taught at a Quaker seminary and a female academy in upstate New York. Growing up in a Quaker household obviously played a part in her interest towards feminism and women’s rights. In Rochester, New York she met many abolitionists and became an advocate for women's suffrage and the temperance movement.

Susan B. Anthony has become a well known face for feminism and is recognized everywhere for her work. She was head of the U.S. delegation to the International Council of Women when she went to the World’s Columbian Exposition in Chicago and to the Lewis and Clark Exposition in Portland, Oregon. She made gigantic progress for women’s rights and changed the world. Unfortunately she never got to see the 19th amendment passed, for she passed away 14 years before it was passed. Susan was the first woman to be on United States currency and even has her own museum.

In an effort to actually achieve the goals women in the 1830s and 40s set to achieve, women took many different approaches to have their voice heard. Many pieces of literature were published by women expressing their impatience with society and the restrictions placed. Many lectures were given on behalf of women in American, as well as a National Women’s Rights Convention in 1850. Lucy Stone demonstrated women’s rights by not taking her husbands last name at her wedding. The Declaration of Sentiments states, “We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men and women are created equal...”

In 1893, Colorado became the first state to grant women the right to vote. All women were eventually able to vote in 1920 (19th Amendment). 1903 brought The National Women’s Trade Union League, this union made sure there were safe and fair conditions for women in the work place. One goal women had in this movement was the control of their own bodies. In 1916, women gained access to birth control thanks to Margaret Sanger. In 1917, Jeannette Rankin was sworn in as the first woman elected to Congress as a representative in the house. These achievements and many more started to occur in America, and these successes show the how far we have come, but also how far we have to go

Feminism has gained more and more respect and recognition over the years. The world listened to women and started treating them the way they deserve. Some effects have been more equitable pay with men, the right to initiate divorce, the right for women to make decisions for their pregnancy, the right to own their own property, etc.
