This quote shows that Gatsby has been trying to achieve this goal of reaching this "green light" for a very long time now. The green light is like Daisy and is located where Daisy lives as well, right by the end of their dock. Gatsby has been trying to get her back ever since he came back from the war, each year passing by slowly. However, he always tries to get ahead to his main goal. The quote's abrupt end is just like Gatsby's life, where he continued to try and reach Daisy but only ending with George shooting him in the pool.

The characters that relate with the green light the most are Gatsby, Daisy and Tom. Gatsby continues to speak of the green light many times throughout the story, where Daisy is the "green light" itself. Gatsby has always been trying to get towards the green light and mentions it to Nick a lot when mentioning Daisy. As Gatspy and his love one Daisy are separated over a distance from each other, they still feel a connection towards one another. The green light would represent how close the light is to Daisy and how it also shows how Gatspy tries to get to Daisy at the same time. This also represents how Gatspy is trying to reach his goals which is to be reunited with Daisy once again after the years he has been away for the Great War. 

Discuss which theme relates to this symbol. Why? How? (1-2 paragraphs)

As Gatspy tries to get together with Daisy, as well of his wealth and popularity, I would consider the theme as an American dream because back then during the 20th century, many wanted to achieve goals of what they want but there's always a price and obstacles you must go through. As for example, Gatspy tries to get back together with Daisy all those years while being away but the one thing that interferes between Gatspy and his true love is Tom. As Gatspy is already wealthy, it seems that Daisy is the most important goal he ever wanted to achieve again.

During the 20th century, Americans always had a dream in order to fulfill their goals and as well having a good life. This relates to Gatspy as while he is wealthy, without Daisy he doesn't feel like his dream is completed yet. As Daisy is his true love that he ever wished to be with all of those years, he just wishes to be reunited. Compared to the American dream and to Gatspy's goals... it shows that it can be achieved but it would be a hard journey in order to have it.
