During the interview I noticed that I stayed in the exploration stage a lot. I used a lot of open questions, probes and silence. I wanted Trey to tell me more, rather than me trying to solve the problem. I wanted to know his feelings and really understand the reason why him and his father had this recent argument.

I did notice that I used less interpretation which is something I want to utilize in the future. I just do not know how to give that "nudge" without feeling like I over stepped.

Counterference:

When Trey mentioned his father blamed him for his drinking problem, I became sad for him. I wanted to give him a hug and tell him that everything is going to be ok. I believe I did a great job with being professional and not becoming invested in my emotion.

In the future this might occur when I am dealing with clients that have abandonment issues or experienced violence because I can relate. I do know that with practice and being culturally competent this can help.

Negatives: There were times in the session when I didn't know what to say at all.

I stated " ya know " often when I couldn't express exactly what I was trying to say. "cringe".

It was hard for me to express my thoughts (I had so many questions but didn't know how to ask the question in a counselor way.) Seemed like I kept having word vomit when trying to express my thoughts.

I was overthinking.

Positives: I became more comfortable to ask the hard questions.

I was able to sit in silence to help my client gather his thoughts, which was scary for me prior to learning these skills.

I do a great job with active listening and eye contact.
