Students are identified and served by grade level teachers for English Language Arts. AIG classes must have a minimum of 18 students in order to be served. Regular ed students can make up the other spots in the class as long as they can perform with the level of rigor that is being provided. AIG classes are rigorous due to breadth and depth of study, not to the amount of work given. Math classes are extended from the elementary level with the course offerings available to each school site. Science and social studies usually consist of a heterogeneous grouping of students.

An AIG student outperforms his/her peers (a student's age group, those with similar experiences/environment) in specific intellectual realms or specific academic subjects. These students who are identified must recieve educational services beyond those offered in a regular ed setting. The Article mandates the Board of Education deliever information about this population and create a standard definition for the state. The plan further describes responsibilites of local plans and how students should be indentified, served, and supported.

It’s a new school year and you’ve been given classes with AIG
students. There are so many acronyms in education, it is hard to keep up with
which one stands for what. One acronym, parents and students alike, seem to
know very well is AIG, Academically and Intellectually Gifted. You have regular classes, AIG classes, ESL classes and EC classes. How are you going to make it work? This padlet will give you some answers to the questions swirling around in
your head.

Does it simply mean more work?

How are students classified?
What special privileges are students entitled to?
Can my students with behavior problems be AIG?
How do I teach differently?

Every student is entitled the best education possible and AIG
students should receive a quality education of enrichment and investigation, not simply another assignment because they finished early. Use this handbook as
a resource to understand AIG and be an advocate for education. Inspire students to be lifelong learners, not just students who “play school” well.
