Helps to introduce familiar words in the chosen language. Allows you the benefit of adjusting the amount of words you want translating. So far so good. I've used this for a while now, especially when I've been doing any kind of focussed reading online. It not only exposes me to a variety of vocabulary but enables me to pick up on vacoabulary I would most often use for my day-to-day language when I become more fluent in German. One has the ability to adjust the percentage of the target language words are translated into. Naturally, this has increased over the past few weeks. A very beneficial tool.

Learn German with Paul Noble

This is a four-part audio book which I listen to on my daily commute to work. In it, Noble goes through the very basics of German and, keeping the listener very assured, he eases them in to constructing sentences like as "Kann ich hier parken derr es ist praktisch?" after a mere few lessons. His approach is a gentle one in that he attempts to teach the language with minimal grammatical jargon. Of course, this has advantages and disadvantages. Furthermore, he appeals to the listener by evoking commonalities between German and English. Pronunciations are provided by a native German speaker and are repeated to allow for consolidation. That said, the speaker largely speaks in a monotone and can make for a rather soulless learning experience at times.

Thought-inspiring movie about the possibility of the return of autocracy to Modern day Germany. I watched it with English subtitles. On the whole, I was able to pick out certain monosyllabic words like 'ich' 'ja' and a few, more words German has in common with English - albeit with German endings - like demokratischen, disziplin and autokratischen. Similarly some words which were spelled out in the movie like Macht. On the whole, I'd say it was rather fast paced for a total beginner and - though it did expose me to the German cinema - in future I'd opt to watch something I'm more familiar with in English with added German subtitles.

A very useful and helpful app. Focuses on the use of sentences and phrases with slightly less emphasis on grammatical aspects. Made up of brief short lessons, it is at once addictive and helpful in learning the German language. Having used this for a while, on a regular basis, I'd say it's a good resource to integrate into one's overall German experience. It makes ones confident in using phrases very early on without being overawed by the grammatical aspects of language learning. A welcome relief when one has been pulling one's hair out over German grammar.

At times, the exercise presents one with words which a German beginner may not have necessarily encountered. Although it helps by enabling exposure to more words, it becomes rather taxing after a while when one has to refer to a dictionary multiple times for a single sentence. All in all, the combination of the two has helped me to pick out the accusative in a sentence - sometimes even if i don't necessarily don't understand the meaning of all the words in a sentence.

Alphabet and pronunciation

These two videos proved very beneficial in helping me learn the alphabet. The first instructs one on the alphabet in a nursery-rhyme-like tunse. To further fine-tune my pronunciation of the various German letters, the second video goes through each letter, giving examples of words with each letter - enabling one to learn additional vocabulary. To consolidate this further, I made a list of the new vocabulary and tried to spell the new words aloud.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=zxQXEyMMC0E
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=wpBPaDI5IgI

It begins by reintroducing nominative and accusative cases and then, with the help of English examples, explains quite thoroughly the idea of the dative case. It then provides ample exercises to really drive home the idea of datives. It also includes a series of mnemonics and patterns to aid the memorisation of the various case endings.

A very good resource. I spent around 45 mins flicking through the German-English part of this. It exposes one to new words but also gives one the context in which to use the word. In addition, I'd then Google the pronunciation of the word to ensure it was correct. At the end of the dictionary, it has a Grammar guide but for the most part I've found it to be a little too advanced for my current level.
