My family used to travel really often when I was younger. Importantly, we tend to travel to rural areas more than urban areas. Since we already lived in the urban areas, my parents thought it would be a good idea if we travel to a quiet city or somewhere in the wild. Due to that reason, I've been exposed to nature quite early in age. In Vietnam, if you are ever in the wild, it is really wild, because they don't have much security and research in that area. Henceforth, I learned a lot to be prepared when it comes to traveling and hiking.
When we moved to the United States, we haven't traveled much since my parents are stuck at work and don't have many financial advantages to support the traveling. However, my desirous to be with nature just grow stronger and stronger. Therefore, I take my backpack with me and just go hike on any mountain that I land on, even from the hottest weather to the coldest weather. I learned a lot when I'm in nature, it not just about the hike but I also learned how to reserve the beauty of nature. I understand why people want to protect the environment, and save the Earth. The beauty of the Earth must go on and on to the next generations. The more time you spend with the nature, the longer you want its beauty to last.

Summary: Into the Wild is a non-fiction book that based on Christopher Johnson McCandless' real life, he was so determined (pg.6) that he would not take anyone's advice or help. After graduating college, he took off and began his journey to be into the wild. He abandoned his car, and be a hitchhiker( pg.3) to challenge his journey to his destination, which was Mt. Kinley. Christopher had took off since 1990, and by 1992 when he decided to arrive on his final destination. By this time he wasn't prepared enough, he got broken gear (pg.6) and did not have much food (pg.4). Christopher was so excited for the final destination that he left all of his personal belongings to the Gailens, even his watch and all the money (pg.7) he had.

Analysis: As a reader, I admire how determined he was for the final destination, and the strong belief he had. I understand that he wanted to live an abnormal life, but he needed to at least be prepared. If he had some food, and proper gear he could enjoy the life he wanted for a little longer. Since he was so determined, and really wanted to challenge he let himself be truly into the wild by leaving everything behind.

#yolo #liveforyourself #finaldestination

Summary: Continue with Christopher McCandless on his journey, he took off and arrived at his final destination, Mt. Kinley, Alaska. The Stampede Trail is known for the abandoned bus (pg.10), that everyone stops there to rest and when the dark comes down. It is also a place where Christopher McCandless has died in 1992. The group of hunters has found his decomposed body with an SOS note (pg. 13). In the note, he said he was injured but his decomposed dead body seems more like his cause of death is starvation (pg.14). Also due to the fact that he wasn't prepared much for his final destination, he became weak (pg.12) and didn't have enough energy to survive through the coldness of Alaska. Since he wasn't prepared much, he didn't have any identification (pg.14) with him, so the rescuers didn't know who he was.

Analysis: I don't really understand Christopher in this chapter because he expected to make it out of here in the mountain, but he wasn't prepared for it. I don't admire how he died because he said he was injured when he was more like starving to death because of unpreparedness. In my opinion, he knew what would happen to his death, but he regretted it at the last minute, so he wrote that SOS notes.

#regretatdeath #anonymous #nojoke

Summary: Christopher McCandless found a home (pg.19) during his journey, Carthage, a small town in South Dakota. Westberg is a person that helps many hitchhiker, and Chris was his favorite hitchhiker so far. Westberg describes Christopher as a friendly person and he loves to socialize with others, therefore he got the respect (pg.19) from everyone. Westberg even got Christopher a job whenever he needs to. Christopher's nomadic (pg.19) life made Westberg worried (pg.22) for Christopher so he got him a place to stay and his wife cooked for him. Christopher's destiny (pg.23) was unknown by his family since his graduation until August that yeat.

Analysis: I do admire Christopher in this chapter because his personalities and his selfless trait. I understand his feelings when his parents tried to help him and connect the bond but not in the way that he wanted. I think his journey is inspired by his desire to be himself and live the real life he had been wanting. I also like when he did think about the community especially those who are extremely in need of help.

#beyourself #2ndhome #nomadic

Summary: Christopher McCandless had abandoned (pg.30) his Datsun car at Detrital Wash because the flash flood had made the engine dead. He couldn't get the car out of the mud, therefore he decided to leave that useless baggage (pg.29) there and continue his journey by foot. The journey from August to December was quite a bit challenging, he traveled south and tramped (pg.30) all around the border between the United States and Mexico. Christopher was hitchhiking at the beginning of August, and connected with other vagabonds (pg.29). He even made sure to stay in touch with those who helped him on his journey to achieve his best life. He had such an experience with the canoe while he was traveling the south and had faced a big storm through it. Christopher made an assumption that he could make it out there in the Alaska bush since he made it through the storm in the south. Christopher made it back to the north and got a job, made some money but then he felt bored and jumped back to his jubilant (pg.34) odyssey.

Analysis: I am shocked and admire his journey in this chapter because I would not survive for a fact that if I ever him. Christopher managed to get through the storm, and I learn that he could socialize with other people with his charms to help him get through certain things. I admire the life that he had while he didn't have many materials on him or the essential things that ordinary people need to survive nowadays. Christopher wasn't physically fulfilled because he was always hungry and penniless, however, he had lived the best life that he could ever dream of.

#ontheedge #southborder #survivor

Summary: After the stay in Las Vegas, his itchy started to wander the world again. Christopher McCandless had stopped at Bullhead City and decided to work at McDonald's. His managers and coworkers remembered him as homeless (pg.41), they commented on the way he dressed and often offer him rides after work. Chris didn't seem to interact with them much since he felt the pressure on him, therefore he quit (pg.41). Chris had met Charlie while he was staying in Bullhead City. Charlie recalled that Chris extremely loved Jack London, sometimes he forgot that all the novels of London were fiction (pg.44), and he tried to live his life based on those novels. Chris was able to stay in touch with Jan Burreus and ask if they can come anytime to visit him. Jan and her boyfriend visited Chris while they were in the area, Jan was nice and always look after him like his mother. Jan knew a little of his background (pg.46) was from D.C. when he focused on the game. Chris was a person that didn't bother (pg.42) much by the pressure when he got asked about his family and tend to run away whenever he was confronted.

Analysis: I both admire and do not admire Christopher McCandless in this chapter. I admire that he was able to get a job and be real about his identity, he even opened a saving account when he got the job. I wonder why he opened the saving account, did he plan anything for his future if he was still alive? I don't admire when his pattern always repeated, he ran away when he felt pressured and be confronted by other people. I understand that it is an annoying feeling when they don't understand your feelings and keep adding pressure to them. However, I think he could have been worked it out if he spoke for himself and learn to express himself around his loved ones.

#pressure #worried #facethereality

Summary: The author of the book, Jon Krakauer has received the letter from Ron Franz to acknowledge more details from Alex, aka Christopher McCandless, after his death. Krakauer has learned the relationship between Christopher and Franz. Ron Franz is an old man, who has served in military and stationed in China and Japan, and recovered from an alcoholic. Franz showed the paternal connection with Chris, because he has lost his own family and offer the adoption of Chris. However, Chris hesitated and repeated his hegira (pg.48) pattern, when the pressure was on his shoulder he tend to run away. This time is a little bit different from others that Chris has met in his journey, Chris gave the old man an advice. Chris harangued (pg.51) Ron in his last letter, to wonder around the world and appreciate the surroundings. Christopher had been a hobo (pg.53) in San Diego, and Seattle while he was looking for a job so that he could be prepared for his Alaska trip. Chris was able to visit Ron, Jan Burreus, and Westerberg for the last time he went to the Alaska trip. Christopher McCandless has made a painlessly (pg.55) goodbye to those who he made connections with and had helped him during his wander. He also left an image of unalloyed (pg.55) and unique hitchhiker in them, which they could never forget.

Analysis: I don't admire of what Christopher McCandless did in this chapter, because I can feel the broken heart of Ron Franz. Christopher had break more than one heart, firstly he left his family without an official goodbye to them. For me, that would be the most rude actions Christopher had ever done. However, his stubbornness didn't stop there, he didn't listen to anyone and didn't let anyone fully help him. His stubbornness has made those who met him in his journey being left empty and their sympathy were enormous that they felt hollow when they heard Chris was dead.

#paternal #inGod'swill #pertinacious

Summary: Christopher McCandless had develop a pattern of avoidance for himself. When others got to close to him or if they confronted him, he tend to run away. Chris made good connections with others but didn't know how to keep the relationships (pg.64). Especially with his parents, he realized that the more he stays with them the more disrespectful (pg.65) they are. Regardless of all his past relationships, he made really good connections with others on his trip, especially Carthage. He kept coming back to the town, and everyone loved him. The closer they get to know him, they learned that Chris was a celibate (pg.65) person. Christopher has died as a chastity (pg.66), which makes sense because he couldn't keep the relationships and not great with commitment. Due to the fact that he was chasing after his big dreams, the wilderness. He would rather to take the big risks (pg.68) in the nature than to chase after the relationships.

Analysis: I actually admire Christopher McCandless when I learned that he has died as a virgin. Most of us wouldn't resist against sex, however he did. It showed the good traits of his, which are being real with himself, hard working, and not willing to give up. However, there is always a two sided story, because he couldn't keep up with the relationships, it also showed that he wasn't great with the commitment, and run away when he felt the pressure.

#virgin4ever #wilderness #commitment

Summary: Jon Krakauer made the comparison between Christopher McCandless and other wanders in Alaska. Krakauer got many feedback letters from McCandless' story in the magazine, they made the assumption that Christopher wasn't different from other kooks (pg.71) when they challenged themselves in Mt. Kinley. However, Krakauer showed details between the stories to show the comparison. For instance, Carl McCun was most likely to Chris because they were unprepared (pg.72) and had youthful minds that they didn't think thoroughly. Even the wise man also failed his own mission, Gene Rosellini, he got over-confident (pg.72) like Christopher but lost basic common sense. John Waterman had some historic (pg.72) background like Chris, for example, he came from D.C. and had a perplexing (pg.71) paternal relationship. He just came to Alaska to climb the most difficult mountain, and never found his body. All these stories have something in common, however, Krakauer still made the statement that Christopher was nothing like them because he was in his right mind, and probably he came to Alaska as a pilgrim. This means that Christopher was following his belief which similar to Everett Ruess's story, died in the desert.

Analysis: I agree with Krakauer that he came to Alaska to follow his belief. However, I do not quite admire Christopher McCandless when he knew that he will die in Alaska but still came anyway. He's so stubborn and he should be more prepared for himself the weather like Alaska to survive a few more days and could complete his mission and come back with good health. Anyway, he might do this with his intentions, died as a youthful person with fulfilled dreams and passions.

#kooks #whowouldcompeteAlaska #prepareness

Summary: Krakauer introduced us to another dude that is quite similar to Chris McCandless. This dude named Everett Ruess, he had been wandering (pg.90) the beauty of the world just like Christ but different direction. Ruess and McCandless had some similar traits like heedless (pg.92), when they didn't take care much of themselves and didn't care about that. Another trait that could be compared is companionship (pg.96), they both love people and couldn't stand to not be charming around people, but they also left to accomplish their dreams. Their stories just keep echoing (pg.92) into each other, because it has so much in common. However, their deaths could be a little bit different, because at least they could found McCandless' body, but Ruess is forever a mystery. Ruess' death is plausible (pg.94) in many ways, that he could be murdered, drown, or fall off the edge.

Analysis: I think Krakauer is trying to make a pattern here between McCandless and Ruess, or it could even be with any wanderers out there. Krakauer's point here is that Chris wasn't the first or last person who made this reckless decision, he highlighted how passionate a person could be with their dreams. We could clearly see that both McCandless and Ruess were both in love with the nature and people around couldn't fill that love.

#dreamers #dumbness #naturelovers

Summary: Finally, the Chris McCandless's mystery has been solved. The Alaskan detectives couldn't identify him at first, because Chris had burned all his identifications. Therefore, they put it on the news article to look for anyone who know the hiker (pg.98). Jim Gallien claimed that he knew the hiker as Alex McCandless from South Dakota, however that was a false lead. Due to this false claim, the detectives became less receptive (pg.100) with Westerberg, who actually could give the actual name and social security of Chris McCandless. Forward to when they tried to contact the family of this hiker, the parents were no longer live in Virginia, but they contacted the first child (pg.100) of the dad, Sam. Sam was so shocked, he thought it wasn't Chris at first when he read the article. He even felt bad for this terrible tragedy (pg.101). Now, that he had confirmed the identity of the gaunt (pg.102) corpse, the last thing he needed to do was to inform the parents that their child is dead.

Analysis: We are approaching the pre-climax, which I predict that we are almost at the climax where the mystery about the relationships with the parents will be revealed. Krakauer foreshadows how the news is reaching the parents. Also, it was incredible how they identified the body through some calls, which did the lead to false statement. However the connections that Chris made with people he met was still trying to help identify Chris McCandless.

#OGdetecting #tragic #headline

Summary: In this chapter, we get the closer look at McCandless' family. Walt McCandless is intelligent and hard working person, and had the ability to work multiple jobs. Walt and Billie had a stressful (pg.107) time when they ran business together to make a lots of money and invest into Chris's and Carnie's future. Chris inherited many traits from Walt and Loren, Billie's dad, Chris and Carnie were welcomed to life with so many unusual gifts (pg.106). Chris took advantage of the intelligent that he got from his dad and made money out from odd jobs. Chris's nature view was from Loren, they both love the wilderness and they also much similar in many perspective. There was always the wanderlust (pg.108) energy in the McCandless' family, and it affected Chris the most. Therefore, after high school Chris took off right away to pleasure his itchy feet and wandering around the world. Chris was the most fearless (pg.109) child in the family, he could climb the most furthest on his own and got out of the house in the middle night as young as two years old toddler. The friends of Chris were also being interviewed in this chapter, and we could see that his point of view of the world was really different than what his friends saw. He hated the idea of hungriness, and believe that everyone deserve a second chance to make up their life. That's why he rather spent the weekends to take care the vagrants (pg. 113) as a teenager than hang out with friends in the downtown. Basically, Chris was a person that didn't like to being told, and probably because he didn't like the idea of going to college but still being told to do so his disappearance for two years was unannounced so he could achieve his dream.

Analysis: I'm really impressive with the traits of Chris, it such an unusual gifts from God, if I was Chris I would be grateful. The family traditions also shock me and the incredibility of how Walt and Billie built up the family. I also feel bad for young Chris and Carnie when they didn't get too close with their parents at young age. I could see the family dynamics in the McCandless and how it affected Chris, he got so many similar traits with his dad and it made the relationship gone worse when both men were stubborn with their egos. I'm kind of related to Chris, because I do have some traits from my dad and we wouldn't listen to each other if we in the argument. That's why I think that love doesn't involve distance, distance makes people grow out of themselves and each other.

#stubbornness #family #likefatherlikeson

Summary: The drama in McCandless' family continue on in this chapter, which also the main thing that pushed him away. Chris had been raised overconfidently (pg.118), which he thought that the odd wouldn't apply to him. Therefore, he always took every chance when the summer came, and he hopped on his Datsun to be on the adventures. During these adventures, he had been discovered the biggest drama about his dad, Walt McCandless, was a liar to both households. He was moving forth and back between two wives, and both wives were pregnant. Neither of these two women knew about his affair, and when Chris found out he turned into a cold (pg.120) and sometimes got the anger (pg.121) inside of him with the family. Chris cut out from all of his family's drama and tried to be independent (pg. 125). Ever since he knew about the family's drama, he thought that all of his life was fiction (pg.123) , and he tried to make it all up for his own life with the adventures.

Analysis: If I was Chris I would have a whole mental break down, and I wouldn't know how to react at all. Poor little Chris, he didn't deserve all this, he meant for something better. I mean through this drama we understand Chris better, and get a closer look at Chris and now we know why he did what he did. His dad left a big scar on him and that's why he never believe in love, commitment, and capitalism.

#drama4life #twolives #daddyissue

Summary: Chris and Carnie had a close connection, because their parents work all the time. Apparently, Carnie was the only person that willing to puck up Chris's ashes and it broke her heart really bad. Carnie and the family always been wonder the twist of Chris's death if he had brought Buck, the family dog. He probably wouldn't be risking (pg.128) the chance of injury Buck. Carnie was more of a gregarious (pg.129) than Chris, but she still couldn't imagine going through of what Chris did, or really understand why he did it. The whole family had different reactions of food and starvation (pg.131), because Chris had died of starvation. Carnie wouldn't leave any food on her plate because it would remind her of Chris. Other hand, Billie the mom couldn't eat for a bit and then she had anorectic (pg.131) when she lost a lot of weight. Walt was gaining weight and same with Carnie, he couldn't left any food on his plate. The death of Chris had left the grief on the family that was irreparable (pg.132) , especially Carnie, they were so close together and now she couldn't imagine losing her only sibling and best friend.

Analysis: I have one sibling too, but we are not that close like how Carnie and Chris were. However, the post trauma and grief that Carnie had after Chris had died makes me want to be more connected with my sister. It is so ironically that Chris had donated to the starvation organization but he himself had died of starvation. Based on the reaction of the mom, I'm kind of worried for her because the disorder eating has a really bad effect mentally and physically. I have seen people with disorder eating before so it touches me really bad when I see people struggling with it.

#preventdisordereating #sisterbrotherhoods #grief

Summary: In this chapter Krakauer wanted to dig deeper on Chris's extended suicide (pg.134) by sharing his own past. When he challenged himself to the hardest summit in Alaska, the Devil Thumb. Krakauer also had problems with his dad at the time like Chris did, and he wanted to see if climbing could really transform (pg.135) a person. Krakauer successfully made it to Alaska and even the base of the mountain. When he was about to start climbing the weather had been harsh on him and he worried that security plane couldn't make it to give him food. However, the next day he was seem as a refuge (pg.135) from the harsh weather and the food did make it in to feed him. Krakauer tried to climb again the next day, the difficulty increased as the more he climb and to the inebriated (pg.138) young Krakauer with all drama, climbing could really give the possibility (pg.138) for a person to change.

Analysis: Wow, I couldn't imagine if Krakauer would dead like Chris too, then we couldn't have any book to read about this. Anyway, he was back safe with all those dangerous climbing and really taught himself about climbing and how it could change a person through mentally and physically. I think climbing could really give you the strength to be strong and wild with the nature so that you could face any challenge in your life.

#climb4life #safetyfirst #change

Summary: Krakaueur had made it back safe to his tent, and he made an impressionable (pg.148)moves, that he decided to smoke a joint. Then, he ends up setting his tent on fire causing it to vaporize one of the walls so the temperature inside drops really bad. It made him thinks about his reason for running away to climb, which is his volatile (p. 147) past with his father. Their relationship is also similar to Chris and his dad. Which the dad is stubborn, doesn't treat his son right, pushes him away with his medical school expectations (p. 148) since he himself is a doctor. Jon uses these complicated (p. 147) family memories as motivation, that he's going to attempt to summit the Thumb to prove his disbelieving dad wrong! He fixes his tent and plan the different direction, which is easier for him to summit on the east side. At sunrise, he summons all of his courage and overcoming all of the terrifying (p. 150) obstacles, he finally makes it to the top . He enjoys the view for a minutes, snaps a few pics, and begins his descent. When he finally makes it off the mountain, he tells a few people what he did. They aren't extremely impressed. He thought that climbing in this harsh weather would make a change in relationship, it really didn't. Years later when writing this book, he realizes that his hubris (p.155) pushed him to his limits to achieve his goal, but that the impact his possible death had on those who loved him would've been catastrophic. Jon believes that Chris had no intention of suicide and he was only chasing his young, irresponsible dream.

Analysis: I admire how the story of Krakauer climb up the Devils Thumb and as a part of his effort to convince the reader of McCandless’s death as meaningful. He dives into an examination of his relationship with his own father. He bucked parental expectation only to realize that he had in fact internalized his father’s strict sense of discipline and achievement. These passages shed yet more explicit light on Christopher McCandless’s psychology. He, too, internalized his father’s perfectionism.

#becareful #learnthebasic #seekforhelp

The sun dipped below the northern (p.164) horizon for fewer than four hours out of every twenty four, and at midnight the sky. McCandless had told Gallien that he intended to remain on the move during his stay in the bush. I might walk (p.164) all the way to the Bering Sea. In last week of May, after moving his few possessions into the bus, McCandless wrote a list of house keeping chores on parchmentlike (p.165) strip of birch bark. Now he must have been alarmed (p.169) to find a three acre lake covering the trail. to avid having to wade through the murky chest deep (p.169) water.

Analysis: Incidents that could be grimly humorous, including the messy and disastrous smoking of the moose meat, are transformed by the knowledge of McCandless’s impending starvation. If he had been able to preserve the moose, he might have lived much longer.

Summary: After his attempt to depart the wilderness was stymied (p.188)by the Teklanika high flow, Chris arrived (p.188)back at the bus on July 8. Noted in his journal that it rained for a week straight, game (p.189) seems to have been plentiful in the last three weeks of July, he killed thirty fire squirrels, four spruce grouse five jays. It is temping to regard this latter notation as further evidence that McCandless long, lonely (p.189)sabbatical had changed him in some significant way. He was hungry, and his meager diet had pared his body down to a feral scrawny of gristle (p.189)and bone.

Analysis: McCandless made his name remembered for his innocence and beauty, when in fact he was also a daring, naive, and severely lacking in survival skills. Even though the assumption is that Chris was dead of starvation, but in Chris's journal had pointed why he felt weak. "Fault of potato seeds" according to Chirs' journal. Krakauer has asked a lot of help from many scientists as Ronald Hamilton and Thomas Clausen. At first, Krakauer thought the culprit was beta-ODAP (¶ 6), a lethal compound that causes muscle weakening and paralysis (¶ 7) in people who are starving. However, after more analysis, he knows that it was a different toxic compound called L-canavanine (¶ 9) that did Chris in. The plant becomes toxic after a certain time of the year to ward off predators, and Chris didn't that would happen to him at that time so it poisoned him really bad.

Analysis: That's a lot of time and money just to spend on someone's mystery dead.

I always have been dreaming about traveling around the world. Chris's journey is so inspirational that makes me want to achieve my dream sooner. Similar with Chris, I sometimes find myself have stubborn traits like I think I could live anywhere in the world and God wouldn't let me die any soon. However, from Chris' experience it shows me that even how experienced are you, we still need to be prepared for anywhere we go. I like the crowded and flashy of cities, but I also like the silence and nature. I think I will travel around Europe first to visit those flashy cities and enjoy the moment of glamorous while I'm still young. Then when I find myself around 30 and still single, I might travel to Asia and Africa to put myself more into the nature. So far, I only been working and studying, but I have save myself a good amount of money. To be honest, I still don't know what to do with that money, because I really want to move out and I think moving also need a lot of money. I have so many things on my bucket list, so I really need to manage my life time so that I can according it throughly.

I understand why Chris made the decisions that are giving up everything and running away, however I don't agree with his reactions to the family's drama. He physically avoided his. mom, and left his sister behind with no last words just because he didn't know how to react to his dad's affair accordingly. Chris could had still chasing his dreams with out hurting anybody in the family, and any of his close friends. If he knew how to act as a man, and know how to solve and settle the problems completely first. He just couldn't suddenly runaway like that, it was so irresponsible. There could be a better way to react to his dad's problem. On his journey, Chris was so lucky that he met a lot of people, who loved him sincerely. However when they got close to him, he keep running away from them. I really don't like Chris because of his confrontation. He didn't know how much he hurt all the people around him. His pain can not be an excuse for him to treat people poorly.
Anyway, Chris and Carnie also doesn't deserve to be treated the way their parents treated them. They must have been hurt so much in their childhood time. I absolutely can't accept that walt was having two households for years and even have a kid with his ex wife after Chris was born. I can't imagine that how much it hurt Chris as a teenager upon receiving such news about his own dad. How could there be such a jerk like Walt. Although he was financially successful, he's completely a irresponsible man and a worst dad ever.
He has a great dream, and working to achieve your dream is also a great thing. But he also needs to care about other things in his life as well. And if he choose to only focus on his dream, please at least be prepared. Everyone, including him knows that living in the wild is a really dangerous risk. But he forgot the most important thing, the map. OMG, who did he think he was, a GOD?! how could he know all the directions with out the map?! He also didn't prepare a backup plan. If he just leave a note or tell someone before he went into the wild that if they dont see him getting out after a certain time, please find him. He might wouldn't have to end up dying alone in the wild and can come back living a better life.

#beaman #terriblechildhood #beprepared
