I will always remember where I was on 9/11. I had just moved to Pennsylvania from Colorado. In the middle of the morning, my husband called to tell me to turn on the TV. Immediately confused as to why, he just told me to watch what was happening. I saw the second plane hit minutes after turning the TV on and stood there in shock. I distinctly remember my mom calling me with worry thinking the whole East Coast was going to be under attack. I didn't turn the TV off the entire day. There was so much confusion about what was happening and so much disbelief that this could actually be happening. More than anything, when I think back to the day, I get that feeling of utter shock. The world has definitely changed since that moment.

The first time I learned about 9/11 was in second grade. I had been really interested in the "Who Was" book series, and just so happened to get my hands on one about 9/11. Now, being seven, I was not able to truly grasp the horrors of that day, but I will always remember the first time reading and seeing pictures of what happened and how it altered my view of society. I felt like I had just seen the real consequences of violence, and my idea of humans no longer felt as perfect.

I did not realize how parts of the tower are kept around the country. I think that this is very important because it reflects the damage and change it brought to the whole country. Many were effected by that day, whether they were there, had loved ones who were there or just watched it happen on tv. The parts around the country symbolize that even if we disagree on everything else, all of American can mourn the losses 9/11 caused.

Every year since elementary school I've heard this story. Having never gone through it, I was always like, "Oh, here's 9/11 again, more lessons on it in class." I didn't hate learning about it, I found it quite interesting to know about our nation's history, but I still knew it was coming each year. But last May, on the Music Department trip to New York City, we went to the 9/11 Memorial Museum, and that brought on a whole new meaning to this day than it had before. I saw videos of people's experiences, how first responders and people in the Towers were calling loved ones, telling them they loved them, thinking they'd never see them again. There were so many damaged vehicles, clothing carts from stores, pieces of the Twin Towers. Because of that trip, I'll never forget about this day, and I know about this day deeper than I ever had.

9/11 was an awful tragedy that caused so many deaths and will always be remembered. However, the events that followed were also deeply terrible, and should not be ignored. Racism and violence towards Middle Eastern immigrants in America (and immigrants in general) increased heavily because of the attacks, which is completely inexcusable.

When I was in fourth grade, my brother was in eighth, and during the news broadcast of the anniversary, I asked why it was always celebrated. He told me everything he had learned, and I just remember sitting there in shock as I tried to process. In the spring, I went to the 9/11 museum while in New York City for a band trip. While I've always heard all these stories about it, seeing parts of the towers that were recovered, listening to some of the phone calls from the planes, and reading some of the facts really opened my eyes to how much I did not know. To this day, I still wear the bracelet I got from the museum as a reminder to never forget the tragedy, and I will continue to wear as it as I learn more and more about it over the years.

My uncle worked in the World Trade Center and was working on the day of the attack. He was very fortunate to work on the second floor and was able to evacuate in time. 9/11 still has an immense impact on him and he now has a fear of airplanes. My uncle has told his story of that day many times throughout my childhood and I will never forget the horrors I have heard about this tragic massacre.

Even though the motto of 9/11 is "Never forget", I still find myself completely forgetting this part of American history. It's different hearing adults talk reverently about or hearing them reminisce on a horror I wasn't even alive to comprehend. It was always easy to disconnect myself from it and dismiss it as an old tragedy with no greater historical significance when perhaps the opposite is true. We learned about 9/11 at a very young age, and that changed my perspective on the world almost immediately. Before, I had no idea humans were capable of such violence, but it was my first eye-opener into how corrupt this world can be.

I thought that is was very meaningful that there are monuments made from fragments of the twin towers all over America. This helps remind people of this tragic events that took place and it also helps show how the whole country was effected by this event not just New York D.C. and PA, which the video mentions. Having a reminder of these events over the U.S. helps keeps the legacy of those who scarified there life that day alive for future generations to look back on.

Every year we hear stories from our teachers about 9/11 and every time their stories are similar but different. They all say that they remember what they were doing, what they were wearing, and how they reacted. Mainly along the lines of hearing it at first, thinking it was just a random pilot crash, figuring it out after the second plane, then starting to worry and calling their loved ones to check up on them. Most teachers also talk about what happened in D.C. and the field in PA since that is closer to us than NYC. I feel that hearing these stories helps us develop compassion about it since we are so far removed from it. All the adults in my life all know what happened and know someone who died, compared to our generation that has no personal experiences with it.
