7/9 - Casey
Mass tourism has several advantages and disadvantages on package holiday destinations. Costa Blanca, the most famous 200 km stretch of coast located in Spain, is a good example of a package holiday destination. In the 1950s, it was a fishing village, however it is now an area of high-rise hotels, holiday apartments, shops, cafes and restaurants, due to package holidays in 1960s. Millions of tourists are now attracted by it’s blue waters, beaches and the wide range of leisure facilities. This sudden growth of mass tourism came with many advantages, such as jobs. With the sudden increase of hotels, shops and restaurants, the number of jobs available in the area went up. Also the infrastructure of this area improved a lot. This is part of the multiplier effect: tourists spend money, new jobs - in tourism and construction. However, because most of the tourists are concentrated during May to October in a small area on the Mediterranean coast, there is increased pressure on the limited resources. For example, there will be a high demand for water, as tourists use twice as much water per week compared to locals. Also, there will be a sudden increase in the amount of waste and high levels of different kinds of pollution is emitted: Air pollution from vehicles and sound pollution from the tourists in the area. Another disadvantage could be from the sudden development of Benidorm, which could have caused locals that were previously living there to move out to create space for buildings. Overall, I think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages of mass tourism on package holiday destinations.

Mark: 4/9 (unfinished)
Mass tourism has many disadvantages and advantages on package holiday destinations. I will be looking at the coast Costa Blanca in Spain. Mass tourism is a form of tourism where thousands of people travel to the same destination at the same period of time. Package holidays are popular because they are cheap and available for popular destinations.

There are many towns on the 200km stretch of Costa Blanca. In the 1950s they relied heavily on fishing as the people's livelihood, but ever since the tourism boom in the 1960's, the area has been urbanised and is completely transformed.

Some examples of positive impact of mass tourism on Costa Blanca include: job opportunities, as more people travel there, more hotels, shops and restaurants etc. are needed to accommodate people and people are employed to build and maintain these businesses, this is the multiplier effect. Tourism also encourages international trade, although package holiday tourists have most things paid for on their trip, they might also bring some of their own currency to shop.

7/9

Costa Blanca, in Spain, is a 200 km stretch of Mediterranean coast running either side of Alicante. In the 1950s it relied pretty heavily on fishing. But, the growth of cheap package holidays in the 1960s have completely transformed the area. Now, it contains many high rise hotels, holiday apartments, shops, cafes and restaurants. Millions of tourists are persuaded to travel there due to the clear waters, vast clean beaches, the dry and sunny weather, and wide range of entertainment facilities.

The growth of mass tourism and package holiday in Costa Blanca has brought many advantages. Mainly the advantages are job related. The mass tourism has created many jobs for locals in the tertiary sector, like: Hotels, Restaurants, Transport, Tour Guides, Cashiers, etc. The infrastructure of Cost Blanca has also improved largely, benefiting both tourists and locals due to the multiplier effect. But it has also benefited the primary and secondary sector indirectly. Tourists need food, so that could be good for the primary sector. And, tourists also buy many souvenirs and goods, which can be good for the secondary sector. In turn helping the economic development in LICs.

However, the high numbers of visitors concentrated mainly from May to October, visiting the relatively small area around the Mediterranean coast, which has increased the pressure on limited resources like water and land. The mass tourism has also created high levels of pollution from transportation and waste from tourists. Also, since a lot of today's international tourism is in the hands of big companies. This means that the profits made in a country leak out to the country that the company mainly operates in. This money could have been spent on helping the development of the country where it was earned, but was used instead by the company for it's own interests.

In conclusion, it is very clear that there are many advantages and disadvantages from mass tourism on package holiday destinations. But it depends mainly on the tourists themselves, or the regulation of the government.

Casey- Spain's Costa Blanca: a premier package holiday destination

Spain's Costa Blanca is a 200km stretch of Mediterranean coast running on either side of Alicante. During the 1950's the coast has been heavily relying on fishing but since the 1960's, the growth of cheap packaged holidays has completely transformed the area.

The growth of tourism due to the premier packaged holidays has brought along many benefits to the region. Because of the increased tourism, this attracts many more tour operators and services into the area. These operations need to be run by people and so provides employment opportunities for many locals. In addition, the increase amount of tourism has caused an increased demand for goods and services and other needs for tourists. In Costa blanca many more local suppliers such as farmers have been employed and have been benefiting from selling to tourists. This is known as the tourism multiplier effect. However such high numbers of visitors especially during May and October has created some negative impacts on the area. For example in Costa blanca the demand for water has dramatically spiked when it comes to the tourism time period. This is bad as water is a scarce resource in the area and tourists typically tend to use almost twice as much water per day compared to local residents. Furthermore, although tourism has attracted many TNC's and hotels which can cause economic growth, the construction of these structures have a negative impact on the local community and the environment. Noise pollution from the building and air pollution comes from many of these construction sties. In addition, the increased number of people in the area causes congestion. More people also means more transportation and cars, this means there are increased carbon dioxide emissions being released into the atmosphere and on a global scale, contributes to climate change and global warming. Currently Costa Blanca disposes of over 50 million tons of waste each year, of which a large portion of the waste is responsible for the many tourists that visit annually. The waste can be either incinerated releasing toxic fumes into the air or dumped in land fills. furthermore many of the times tourists coming from outside the local region may litter, making the place look unpleasant. The rubbish may also end up in the water effecting marine life as any fish or bird that mistakes the rubbish for food could die. In addition, many of the times tourists are uncaring and do not respect or follow local traditions, disrespecting the locals creating conflict. Adding on to tradition, local traditions may start to erode and eventually disappear if international tourists keep on visiting as the use of English and international customs would be adopted and practiced more often over traditional practices. Finally because of the packaged deal, many tourists are buying holidays home the area which is bad as they are only being used for a short amount of time and is taking up space. This could drive up local prices which is unfair to locals as they have to pay more.

CS - Costa Blanca, Spain
Mass tourism brings various impacts to package holidays and destinations, namely economic, socio-cultural, and environmental impacts.
Because an increased amount of tourism will lead to an increased demand for services such as transport, hotels, restaurants, and in retail, many job opportunities are created. These job opportunities that have been created are varying, and are spread out about the four economic sectors. Although the demand is mostly for services (secondary sector), agriculture is also important as tourism also brings a demand for food, therefore agriculture (primary sector).
Socio-cultural impacts are brought about by the increased tourism because there may be clashes between the local traditions/cultures that are practiced and the greatly commercial influences that tourists bring. Local people of the Spanish coasts may feel as though the presence of the tourists are highly disruptive, and therefore in general, the social-cultural impact is negative in this area.
Increased tourism also causes environmental impacts such as the removal and clearance of local ecosystem to make space for infrastructure directed towards the needs of tourists.
The impacts of increased tourism in Costa Blanca, Spain has resulted in all of these consequences. For example, the environmental impact in Costa Blanca is severe. Increased tourism has caused large amounts of coastal ecosystem damage in the area, as they are often cleared for beach replenishment, which is harmful to the environment surrounding the local area.

Grade: 5/9 level 2

Costa Blanca is a well known place in Spain to spend your summer. Package holidays can cause mass tourism. There are different ways to increase tourism however, increasing tourism too much will not help. If there is more tourism, It will help the country by creating new jobs however, there can’t be too many tourists. Package holidays are packages which are planned out for you without having you to pay any money on the trip unlike travelling yourself and paying money on the way. If there is mass tourism. In Costa Blanca, Spain, Tourism is increasing there by alot which will be able to create jobs and lower the unemployment there. Tourists will not just be able to create jobs in Costa Blanca, But also in the building industry and tourists need accomodation. However in Costa Blanca during May, There was a high demand for water in areas which was a scarce resource. Tourists are creating a large amount of pollution every year which is affecting the environment for the residents living there. The waste being created there is increasing year by year. Package holidays are encouraging more tourists to go to the destination which will create a lot of disadvantages for residents. Even if they built more buildings in Costa Blanca, They would only be used in summer as there aren’t alot of tourists visiting other times as they are at work.

I think that Costa Blanca is a very well known destination however, it is creating so many disadvantages for the residents although it is encouraging more tourism.

Costa blanca is a 200km stretch of mediterranean coast running on either side of Alicante. Mass tourism has changed this area completely. Mass tourism has caused high rise buildings all around the area as firms get most profit due to the good view. There are also many restaurants, cafes, shops and hotels around the area because there is a high density of people there thus increasing chance of consumers. Tourists are attracted to the beautiful view of the beach and coast but they could bring lots of noise pollution, air pollution from transport, and littering thus ruining the beach and sea. Mass tourism could also bring lots of environmental impacts such as clearance of habitats for plants like mangroves for infrastructure. They could also destroy coral reefs because they dont know how to treat them correctly and scuba divers are a big problem.

In conclusion, we can see that mass tourism can boost the country's economy and bring many advantages but could also cause many environmental problems and disadvantages to the country.

Score: 9

Mass tourism is large-scale tourism to a specific place. Mass tourism has a number of different impacts on package holiday destinations such as Hong Kong. These impacts come under the three headings of; economic, environmental, and social.
For Hong Kong, mass tourism from other places such as Europe and the United States have made a big impact on the environment because of Hong Kong's limited space. It resulted in high levels of air pollution due to the large amount air pollutants released by transportation used by tourists. Additionally, higher levels of tourism has caused more noise and light pollution because of everyday activities. However, some places have been preserved for the sole purpose of promoting tourism in the area, such as the HK Wetland Park. These also help to promote environmental knowledge and awareness for the need of nature conservation, thus protecting the environment. Therefore, the environmental impact can be both positive and negative but due the small size of Hong Kong, negative effects like air pollution.
Tourism has also brought about many economic impacts. Firstly, it has benefited Hong Kong creating a plethora of job opportunities for locals in the tourism sector. As a result, many people now have a sustainable source of income to rely on. Also, Hong Kong is known for its large tourism industry. However, when TNCs enter the industry, it can make many small firms close down due the the marketing power of the large firms. However, jobs created for locals can be seasonal and therefore only effective for short periods of time. Furthermore, mass tourism can result in congestion, which would affect local activities.

Thirdly and finally, tourism has had large social effect on Hong Kong. Firstly, many traditional and local practises have been preserved for the purpose of viewership from tourists. Additionally, tourism encourages people to interact and get together from all over the world. On the other hand, tourism can erode local customs as they are highly dominant due to the reliance on languages such as English. So, tourism results in several social effects in a city like Hong Kong.

All in all, it is evident that there are positive and negative impacts on a place where package holidays are available. However, this depends on how the government decides to regulate things such as environmental damage and the preservation of local heritage.

Case study: The impact of mass tourism on a country.

Mass tourism is defined as the bloom in tourism caused by the rise of globalisation. Package holiday is relatively cheap, organised, and includes plenty of services so it attracts people.

Spain's Costa Blanca has been completely transformed by package holidays. It has caused positive impacts economically, such as the multiplier effect, which has benefitted most people. Firstly, it has brought lots of job opportunities, as tourists arrive and they spend money in not just tourism but also in construction and for local suppliers, like from fishermen.

Mark: 7/9

There are multiple factors that increases the number of tourists across the globe. Things like extended holidays, large quantity of disposable income, developed transportations and fancy advertisements have made traveling a popular leisure. As countries realize that they are benefiting from the visiting of travelers, their will further encourage this act by producing deals. One of the most commonly used strategies to attract potential customers is the packaged holiday. In this case, the traveler will have the entire trip planned out including transportation, activities, living area and etc. These packaged holidays are most often allocated in popular destinations and could bring both advantages and disadvantages to the area. One of the most famous stretch of coast is in Spain’s Costa Blanca. Reportedly since the 1960s when the package holiday was used, the area has transformed from a quiet costal area to an area fully of hotels, shops, cafes and restaurants. This consequently helped to attract tourists as they are interested in visiting the area while knowing it is well developed for them to live there. One of the main benefits of mass tourism is that it creases employment opportunity. This will better the local economy both in the construction industry and their agricultural industry from supply the tourist with their needs and wants. This creates a multiplier effect where more tourists lead to more purchases which will create more jobs. All these factors will urbanize the region with even more additional facilities above the hotels and restaurants. On the other hand, there are some disadvantages to the matter such as destruction of ecosystem. There are wild lives and species that were evicted due to the constructions of buildings across the stretch of the coast. The construction causes high level of light, noise and air pollution that effect the environment of the Costa Blanca area. The transportations that allows the travelers to reach Costa Blanca such as cars, planes and boats also massively contribute to the waste pollution produced. Overall, it shows that tourism can massive impact an area by transforming the area to meet the travelers’ demands. It has proven to be both beneficial and destructive to the area, therefore it will continue in a repetitive cycle.
