I expect you'll need to be up early tomorrow for a photo-call or something."]]> 2021-10-20 18:05:19 UTC https://padlet.com/moyer153/d3b047g0wwj8zzi6/wish/1831261863 moyer153 https://padlet.com/moyer153/d3b047g0wwj8zzi6/wish/1831294147 The book starts out with the unsettling attack of Death Eaters, Voldemort’s followers.  The real panic starts when his symbol is cast into the sky, which hadn’t been seen in years because the Death Eaters are cowards.  This brings talk of cancelling the Tri-Wizard Tournament, a deadly competition where all of the wizarding schools in Britain come together and have three students — one from each school — compete for the Tri-Wizard Cup (and money).  The tournament had not occurred in years because someone had died in it.  On the topic of deadly, a new professor arrives at the school, and he has an interesting way of teaching dark arts.  Through actually casting unforgivable curses, you’re shown just how intense the professor, Mad-eye Moody, is.  

It's finally time to see who has been deemed worthy enough to compete for the cup, and after all the names have flown out of the Goblet of Fire, an extra name appears: Harry Potter.  Harry is forced to compete even though he is not of age.  The mystery side plot of who entered his name starts, and so does the bullying towards Harry.  With Hermione by his side, he gets through all of the tasks and approaches the final round: the maze. 

After a few hours, Harry reaches the cup, but so does the fellow Hogwarts 'champion' Cedric Diggory.  They decide to both win, and as they grab the cup, they are transported to a graveyard.  Multiple of Voldemort's followers appear, and one kills Cedric to fulfill the ritual ("kill the spare").  Harry is held captive, and his blood is taken to bring back Voldemort into true human form.  After Voldemort returns, a battle ensues, and Harry gets away.  

It turns out, Mad-eye Moody was actually Barty Crouch Jr. in disguise.  He was arguably Voldemort's most loyal follower.  He had been orchestrating every bit of help Harry received during the tasks, and even had a hand in how fast he got to the cup.

The Goblet of Fire's cleverly assembled plot allows readers to know wizards around the world, taking off the limit of only seeing what it's like in Hogwarts.
