Long term english learners assessments support

Summary: According to chapter 2, long term english learners are to have the the adequate resources in both primary and secondary education. Districts are also to keep track of how many ELs are enrolled and have designated benchmarks to keep track of growth progress. (Chapter 2 pg. 6).

Why it matters: Benchmarks and assessments can be administered in various formats such as oral, written, observation, and play-based. The use of assessments helps schools keep track of EL student progress and the data can be used to see growth or decline in the long term.

Setting school expectations for ELs

Quote from text: "Develop a clear instructional vision and high expectations for ELLs. This means being clear about academic goals for these students, communicating these goals emphatically to stakeholders in the district, and ensuring that ELLs are held to the same high standards as other students throughout the district" (Chapter 2 pg. 8).

Why it matters:

Students should be taught school wide expectations even if they require additional support because it allows them to adapt to the school environment with more ease. With EL students who struggle with English the rules, goals, and expectations can be taught in their home language and can begin adjusting to the school. The video I attached to this explains that EL students, especially those that arrive from countries outside the US may have other norms in their home country and teaching them sets of rules and expectations in a school will allow EL students to adapt to schools in the US.

Quote from text: "Ensure that all teachers of ELLs have access to high-quality professional development that provides differentiated instructional strategies, promotes the effective use of student assessment data, and develops skills for supporting second-language acquisition across the curriculum" (Chapter 2 pg.9).

Why it matters: Teachers that are prepared in specific areas in education are more likely to know how to help their students best. For example, if it were not for this course I would miss out on information on how to support my future EL students.

Quote from text: "The collection and analysis of data on the characteristics, teachers, English proficiency level, program placement, and academic attainment of ELLs are critical to ensuring the success of these students. This means integrating all data on ELLs into the district’s general database to ensure broader access and to promote regular review of this data by school and district instructional staff and the board" (Chapter 2 pg.9).

Why it matters: Collecting student data allows educators understand a students progress. For example if the student moved schools or district, other educators can view the data to understand where the student falls academically to best support the student.
