The present text is about a young black girl who has to deal with racism at college. Carol who is the protagonist who just finished Highschool and now heads to college. She belongs to a poor backround due to her mother who is a cleaner. Her first few days at college were very hard. Other students talked about expensive items they own or exclusive places they visited. She feels excluded because she is the only one who is not able to join in those conversations. Furthermore, she only seems to be one of the very few coloured students at college. She describes herself as "ulglystupidfatpoor"(l.25) which emphasizes how she recognizes how her sorrounding reacts to her. This quote belongs to her thoughts about the situation. The fact that she creates a neoligsm out of those bad words makes it a bit funny. She is obviously no that much attached by the words. It is rather an expression of disappointment towards her sorrounding. But this also stirs up when she claims that others simply "looked through her"(l.27). At the beginning she was not accepting that and therfore "she studied the inmates to find the best match for her"(l.71). Unfortunately, she had no luck with that. Thats why when she got home and returned in the holidays to her mother, she stated that "I am done, Mama, I am done"(l.?) which makes clear in how far she dislikes college. Moreover, this circumstance gets even more tragic because she really likes the work at college and "her studies"(l.34-35). Her mother does not understand her problemsat all. She seems quite disappointed when she hears which problems hold her back from going back to college. A lot of sacrifices had been made to give her the chance to study. Therefore her mother states "did your father sacrifice his health so that you could become a punky Rasta person who smells?"(l.65-66).
Afterwards she feels motivated because of her mothers words and returns to college. Her problems do not get less but she is able to find a boyfriend and accepts her background way more better.

Carole is the main character in the novel „Girl, Woman, Other“ which is set in present day England. The given excerpt focusses on her first day at university. Carole is a Nigerian young adult who is very insecure, with very high expectations, caused by her mother.

One can see those high expectations in l.65-66 „did your Papa sacrifice his health so that you could become a punky Rasta person who smells?” Because of those expectations, she thinks she is under high pressure. But in truth, there is nothing that she has to worry about.

Furthermore it comes clear that she feels insecure because she thought people would looked through her and walked around her. She expresses her insecureness by saying: “[…], or was she imagining it?” (l.27). One can see that she feels not in the right place. This causes that Carole would not go back to university, but she was convinced by he mother, so she returned and even managed to find new friends. Carole can also be descriebed, as a introverted person, because she thinks way too much about her and others behavior and her environment ”… that first week she counted on one hand the number of brown-skinned people in her college…” (l.??). Caused by that are her massive insecurity and high expectations.

All in all one can say that this makes Carole a round character. There is definitely a huge development seen. She went from a restrained to a open minded personality and even enjoyed her studies.

Carole is the main character in the novel "Girl, Woman, Other", written by Bernadine Evaristo and published 2nd of May 2019 that deals with Carole and in how far she feels left out and different due to her background of being black and poor. In the novel snippet Carole arrives for her first day of university and does not find any friends and needs to sit alone in the cafeteria.
Carole has an nigerian background from both of her parents but lives in the UK and also goes to university there. Her mom is a cleaner and her dad is dead.
While she is sitting alone in the cafeteria she overhears the conversations of the other white rich students that talk about their holidays and other great experiences that Carole could never imagine. She has always been insecure about her poor life and how her mother can not afford certain things and due to her being left out and being forced to overhear them she feels "[..] crushed, worthless and a nobody." (l. 17)
Her constant insecurity about herself and how she is seen by others let her ask herself if "[...] people walked around her or looked through her ?" (l. 27) She seems to see herself as the victim and feels directly ignored and assumes that nobody could like or wants to talk to her.
Her self-pity is illustrated again as she thinks "nobody talked loudly about growing up in a council flat on a skyscraper estate with a single mother who worked as a cleaner..." (ll. 20) She is feeling ashamed of her background and how it can not give her the things as the white rich students brag about.
After somebody directly discriminates her by assuming she is dealing with drugs only due to her being black, she loses her nerve and calls her mom with "I´m done, Mama, I´m done" (l. 25) One can imagine, that her mom is her trusted person and she can be open about her feelings.

All in all it can be concluded that Carola struggles with her self insecurity and it influences her life immensly - mostly in her interaction with others and especially since she arrived at her new university. Her only mental support is her mother, who can only cope with a small part of her struggles but gives her best to help her.

The novel deals with racism against black people. Carole who is the main character of the novel, is affected by racism while going to university.
She is a Nigerian girl and lives with her single mother because her father died several years ago. Her mother works as a cleaner that's the reason for their critical financial background.

At her first day at university she could not connect with anyone. This made her insecure and unseen. Additionally the situation makes her feel left out. This can be illustrated by the author describing her as "[...] crushed, worthless and a nobody" (l.17)
Furthermore it is hard for her to connect with other students and to integrate herself. She might be an introverted person.
Another reason why she feels left out is because of her special financial and cultural background. All the other students at the university are white rich people, who talk about their holidays all over the world but "[...] nobody talked loudly about growing up in a council flat on a skyscraper estate with a single mother who worked as a cleaner [...]" (ll.20) It underlines her feeling of being excluded by white rich people. She might also be ashamed about her background and being poor.
After somebody assumes that she is a drug dealer she feels discriminated and upset. Carole is overwhelmed by the situation, but "(...) she like(s) her studies" (l.34)
Even though she really likes going to university she wants to quit it. That is stressed by her saying " I'm done, Mama, I'm done" (l. 32). It shows that she easily gives up on things she likes.
But after her mother talked to her and made her encourage she started to interact and connected with people. It confirms that she has a good relationship with her mother.

All in all it can be said that Carole is a round character she went from being insecure, unconfident and introverted to being confident and talkative. These characteristics made it easier for her to find friends. It shows that her mother has an huge impact on her behavior. Moreover does it show their close relationship.

Carole Williams is the main character in the novel "Girl, Woman, Other", which is about girl who has her first day at university in the UK.
Carole is an afro american girl from Nigeria who was growing up in a council flat on a skyscraper estate, that emphasizes that she grew up in poor conditions (cf. l. 20). Already in her first week at college, she realized that she is one of the few black skinned people, which makes her feel lonely (cf. ll. 6 f.). Carole feels very unconfident and also unseen at her first day which is demonstrated by the climax "They made her feel crushed, worthless and a nobody" (l.17) which also illustrates that she can´t adapt to the people there. Furthermore the neologism "uglystupidfatpoor" expresses the exent of Carole´s insecurities that are mostly about her outer appearance. Moreover she feels that she is beeing watched by the other people at the university. The fact that she is a black young woman not only makes her feel lonely but also different, which cause that people could look at her differently (cf.l.27). In addition, Carole is in an inner conflict with herself because she liked her studies but feels unwell and excludet in the presence of the other students, so it leads to the desire to turn back to her mother and live her old live than to make friends at college. " I´m done, Mama, I´m done" (l.36) points out that she has no longer strength to continue her study and wants to give it up by reason of self-doubt if she can finish her study despite her problems. Besides the text prove that her mother can identify strongly with her nigerian culture which indicates that Carole is influenced by her cultural background (cf. ll. 55f.). Aside from that she has a strong relationship to her mother and because of it her opinion is very important for her. Thus she wants to meet her mother´s requirements for example by making new friends (cf. ll.60f.).
In conclusion, she is a round character because she develops while the given scene from the novel from an introverted and insecure young woman to an open-minded and contentedly person to new friends.

She has a low self-confidence and is extremely insecure about her cultural differences and appearance. Especially the neologism “uglystupidfatpoor” (l.25) underlines the extent of Carole’s insecurities that are mostly about her outer appearance, which does not represent the “normal beauty standards” she herself stands for. She combines her insecurities with her social background and her poor living conditions. “[...]nobody talked loudly about growing up in a council flat on a skyscraper estate with a single mother who worked as a cleaner…” (l.20-21). Carol feels different and excluded from the others because she comes from a different background. In the extract it gets clear that she feels like a nobody in other eyes and as she and her personality is unseen, caused by her social background and different cultural identity in her opinion “they made her feel crushed, worthless and a nobody…” (l.17). She feels like she cannot adapt to the people in her college.

Characterization

Carole is the main character of the novel “Girl, Woman, Other” in which she is presented as an insecure and a not very self-confident person. She visits a university in the UK, where she just arrives at the beginning of the extract, followed by the reader getting informed about the first semester of her and her inner conflict. The reader gets an impression of her, by reading a monologue like text, but written in third person view.

One can conclude from the novel extract, that Carole is a insecure and a person with a huge inner conflict. “they made her feel crushed, worthless and a nobody [...]” (l.17), this climax illustrates how much of a insecure person Carole is, she gets easily influenced by other peoples reactions on her. Based on the experiences the others give/gave her, she feels unsure and unseen. This makes it furthermore difficult for her to adapt to the students and find new friends. Another point for the difficulty of finding new friends, is the fact, that she has high expectations for her friends. Representative for this is the quote “[...] not with the misfits who skulked about the place with scowls on their faces, their hair gelled up into purple Mohicans...” (ll.60-62); “nor was she interested in the boring ordinaries, […] students who were so bland they disappeared, even to her” (ll. 67-68). Additionally there is the inner conflict that Carole seems to have, “[...] although she liked her studies and was managing to stay on top of most of it, she didn´t belong there and wasn´t going back [...]” (ll. 34-35). It can be concluded, that Carole wants back to her mum, because the way the other people treat her makes her feel excluded and out of place and it would be easier for her to go back and live her old live than trying to join the others. Even though she troubles with her self, she decides, to the end of the extract, to go back to university and carry on studying “Carole returned to her college resolved to conquer the place where she would spend the next two and half years of her life [...]” (ll. 57-58).

In conclusion, one can say, that Carole is a round character, which develops throughout the extract. She has mood swings and is not really concerned by any option she weighs up.

Carole is the Main Character in the Novel "Girl, Woman, Other" which is set in present day England. The given excerpt focusses on her first days at university.

Carole is an african american teenager who just starts studying at the university.

The Phrase "Nobody talked loudly about growing up in a Council flat on a skycraper estate with a Single mother who worked as a cleaner…."(ll.20) underlines her familys poor background. Furthermore, caused by the experiences of the others, she feels very unconfindent and also unseen. It is difficult for her to adapt to the people at the university. This can be seen in the words “they made her feel crushed, worthless and a nobody".

The neologism "uglystupidfatpoor"(l.25) shows the extent of Carole's insecurities that are mostly about her outer appearance. Moreover, the repetition "I'm done, Mama, I'm done"(l.36) illustrates that Carole gives up easily even thought she likes the studies so it is shown that she isn't self-confident. The other phrase "people walked arround hervor looked through her, or was she imagining ist?"(l.27) portrays that she is very insecure about herself because she is the only black woman at the university. Therefore she thinks that she is different from the other students because the others look at her that way too. Furthermore, the sentence "although she liked her studies and was managing to stay on top of most of it, she didn't belong there and wasn't going back" (l.34-35) underlines that Carole has an inner conflict and wants to go back home to her mother because she doesn't feel comfortable with the way the other people are looking at her. So she feels left out, out of place and it seems to be easier for her to go back and live her old live than trying to join the others.

Another important aspect to be mentioned can be seen in the phrase "...people who would horrify her mother if she brought them home" (l.64). This excerpt gives attention to the strong relationship Carole has to her mother because even though they don't always have the same opinion, it is quite important for Carole what her mother thinks about her friends.

While they have a strong relationship, it also has to be taken in consideration that the mother of Carole has high expectations in her daughter, which causes much pressure that lasts on Caroles shoulders (cf.ll.65-66).

At last, there can be seen a development of Carole's attitude. The phrase "[...] she studied the inmates to find the best match for her..."(l.71) illustrates that she becomes more likely to talk with other students.

In conclusion, it can be said that Carole is presented as an unconfidend person who has difficulties to get contacts at university.

She has many insecurities which are mostly based on her skin colour.

All these aspects cause an inner conflict. On the one hand, Carole likes studying at university, but on the other hand, it is difficult for her to handle her insecurities.

Carol, a character in "Girl, Woman, Other" by Bernardine Evaristo, is portrayed as a person with low self-esteem and a strong attachment to her mother's opinions. The text focuses on her first days at the university.

The quote "they made her feel crushed, worthless and a nobody" (l.17) illustrates Carol's lack of confidence and feelings of being unseen due to the experiences she had with others. Despite trying to fit in, Carol feels unable to adapt to the people around her. Her relationship with her mother is a crucial aspect of her life, as seen in the quote "people who would horrify her mother if she brought them home" (l.64). It is evident that Carol values her mother's opinion of her friends, even though they do not always agree on everything. This illustrates a strong bond between Carol and her mother.

Carol's tendency to give up easily is apparent in the quote "I'm done, Mama, I'm done." This line indicates that she is not confident in herself and easily gives up, even though she enjoys her studies. This lack of self-assurance is further highlighted throughout the text, particularly in the use of the neologism "uglystupidfatpoor" (l.25), which underlines the extent of her insecurities, particularly about her outer appearance.

Despite liking her studies and being able to stay on top of most of it, Carol feels like she doesn't belong there and doesn't want to return, as seen in the quote "although she liked her studies and was managing to stay on top of most of it, she didn't belong there and wasn't going back" (l.34-35). This inner conflict stems from the way others view her, making her feel excluded and out of place. For Carol, it is easier to go back and live her old life than try to join the others.

Overall, Carol's character is shaped by her lack of self-confidence, strong attachment to her mother's opinions, and insecurities about her outer appearance. She struggles to adapt to the people around her and has a tendency to give up easily, making her feel excluded and out of place. Despite her love for her studies, she feels like she doesn't belong and wants to return to her old life.

Carole is the main character in the novel "Girl, Woman, Other" by Bernadine Evaristo. The novel is set in present-day England, and Carole is an African American teenager who has just started studying at university. She comes from a poor background, and this is highlighted in the phrase "Nobody talked loudly about growing up in a Council flat on a skyscraper estate with a Single mother who worked as a cleaner" (ll. 20). Carole feels insecure and unseen due to the experiences of the other students. She struggles to adapt to her new environment, and this is evident in the phrase "they made her feel crushed, worthless, and a nobody" (l. 21).

Carole's insecurities are primarily related to her outer appearance, and the neologism "uglystupidfatpoor" (l. 25) illustrates the extent of her self-doubt. She is also very insecure about being the only black woman at the university, and the phrase "people walked around her or looked through her, or was she imagining it?" (l. 27) shows how different she feels from the other students. She doesn't feel comfortable with the way people look at her and wants to go back home to her mother because she doesn't belong. This is highlighted in the sentence "although she liked her studies and was managing to stay on top of most of it, she didn't belong there and wasn't going back" (ll. 34-35).

Carole's strong relationship with her mother is evident in the phrase "people who would horrify her mother if she brought them home" (l. 64).
