Is unwinding murder?

Yes, unwinding is murder because unwinding strips the rights of the person being unwound and prevents them from living as a whole. Unwinding is murder because it is taking away someone’s identity, killing who they are inside. Though I agree that being unwound is considered to be murdered, I believe that it's a different type of murder. Being unwound may be worse than being murdered because if you’re murdered, then you know your life is complete, but if you’re unwound each part of you dies at different times.

Unwinding = Murder

Murder is the premeditated killing of another human being. Unwinding is the planned or premeditated process of dividing a human being. To kill an individual is to take their life from them. If divided, a person is not themselves; therefore, they are dead. The novel Unwind explains the theory of unwinding and claims "The Bill of Life was supposed to protect the sanctity of life. Instead it just made life cheap" (Shusterman 53).

Connor Lassiter

Connor Lassiter is a sixteen-year-old boy who has trouble obeying authority. Though he is troublesome, he does not deserve to be unwound. Receiving the nickname "Akron AWOL," Connor presents to his peers the idea of running away to avoid being unwound. Throughout the novel, Lassiter proves that people can change and that unwinding is not always the answer. Also, Connor does not hold a double standard for unwinding as stated in the novel, "I'd rather die than get a piece of an Unwind" (169). He neither wants to be unwound nor does he want to accept any limbs or organs from an unwind.

Unwinding has an impact on even the toughest of them all. For instance, Roland is known as the alpha and nearly killed Connor just to prove that he could have if he wanted to. Even the alpha has fear. As Roland is being walked down the red carpet to be unwound, he wails for Risa to turn towards him. This action indicates that Roland believes he will not be here once the unwinding is completed; thus, supporting the idea that unwinding is murder. The fear of the unknown is greatest when you are the one experiencing it.

Unwinding a child implements the idea that the child is not wanted or loved and needs to go. This feeling could be part of why unwinds are known to be wild and dangerous because their parents decided they didn't want their kids anymore. The idea that a parent signs over the right to basically exterminate their child without their child's consent is enough to push anyone over the edge.

Process of Undwinding

The process of unwinding takes the utmost knowledge of the human anatomy. This statement refers to the surgeons who perform the operation and their morals. They know they are dissecting children, so that their parts can be used on "those who need them" as if the child who possesses them now is not of need of them. A person is not the same without their body parts or their organs because those are what makes up them. For example, Josias Aldridge has an arm from an unwind who was good at magic. Aldridge informs Connor he has no idea how to do magic that it's completely the muscle memory of the unwind. The hand is not his. It is not part of him, but just a part of him. It's not who he is, it's just what is grafted onto his skin.

A TV without a remote seems silly. A computer with no keyboard or mouse is completely useless. A car with different types of tires feels different with each new set of tires. A person who is in a divided state feels different than when they were whole. Would you rather a donut or a donut hole? Both are the same component, yet they are different. A donut is more than the hole. A person is more than organs and limbs. They are worth more than a signature that ends their lives and who they are without their consent.

The Dunfee's

Though their parts are used for others, the child that was once there is not there anymore. It is no way to live. It’s almost impossible. The Dunfee’s found every child who received a piece of their unwound son, Harlan Dunfee. Even as each person gathered around talking and learning more about Harlan, when Harlan’s thoughts formed together as one again and looked towards his parents listening to them say “Welcome home,” it wasn’t the same. Thoughts are not the same as appearance or feelings. Though Harlan’s thoughts combined as one again, it was more than Harlan’s eyes looking at the Admiral and his ex-wife. It was the eyes of kids who unintentionally took a piece of the Dunfee’s life away. It was an attempt to regain the once whole human being that stood before them in years past.
