The virus affects the Solanaceae family of plants which includes tomatoes, potatoes, tobacco, capsicum, peppers and certain weeds. There are three main groups of Potato Virus Y strains: PVYO (ordinary type) occurs in most potatogrowing countries worldwide; PVYC, PVYN and also the new strain, PVYNTN.

The virus is a potyvirus which have flexible rod-like structure. It consist of a nucleic acid protected by a protien coat that is single stranded. There is no envelope.

Mode of Infection

-The virus is transmitted through grafting,which is the wind or human contact, and aphid transmission. Aphids are plant lice. It takes seconds for the aphids to obtain the PVY and seconds to transmit it to a healthy plant.

-Transmitted from seed piece cutting operations or from poor maintenance of the crops from tissue damage by tools or machinery

-Mottling,

-Change/distortion of leaves ( dark-brown areas in the blades of leaflets and curved stalks)

-Necrotic rings on potato

-Loss of yield (Virus plants producing fewer or shorter tubers than healthy plants)

-Latent infections

-Stunting

-Leaf drop

-Premature death of stem

Treatments/prevention

Plant crops early to avoid aphids. Later plots of plants should be as far away from the early crops as possible. Scout fields periodically to see if any plants are infected. Destroy infected plants after spraying with insecticides. And use reflective mulches. You can also apply crop oils from July to vine kill or kill vines as early as possible to reduce virus spreading.
