It is often closely associated with project based learning, as the performance assessment is often deemed a project, instead of a test or quiz, but a performance assessment does not have to be a long project. This type of assessment requires students to apply their knowledge and skills to real world problems. Performance assessments should be graded on a detailed yet flexible rubric to account for the creativity and variance that each student can have in the assessment.

Students would need to use their knowledge of phonics, sentence writing, and story structure to produce an original story. The assessment could be broken up into a few smaller assignments to make it less intimidating.

Adjustments can be made so that all students have equal opportunity and understanding of the learning objectives.

    These assessments also provide a baseline for understanding how much learning has taken place after the learning activity is completed.  A diagnostic pre-assessment provides an opportunity to determine if students remember the concepts they need. If some students don't remember important concepts, then a refresher will make the current activity more meaningful and improve learning outcomes for students.
