Settlements, around 12,000 years ago, were small and agriculturally based. They then grew to develop the presence of agricultural surplus, the rise of social stratification and a leadership class or urban elite, and the beginning of job specialization, because of irrigation, farming, and domestication of animals and plants. Hierarchy and class systems were formed because of this.

Suburbs were caused by urbanization. Large, better quality houses for cheaper cost. More spread out than cities. With a growing economy after WW2, and high crime rates in the cities, people started moving to the outskirts of the cities. While equal amount of people were split between urban, suburban, and rural in the 60s, urban populations have increased. Population density of rural areas have increased, spread of business, and growing populations.
A Lot of people are returning to the cities, while others are moving to even rural-er areas.
