When I think of ValuJet, nothing comes to mind. I grew up in Puerto Rico, which meant I needed to take an airplane to go anywhere off the island. When I think of airlines, i think of American Airlines, JetBlue, Southwest, Delta and United. It was a small startup airline, founded in 1993 that after the crash was bought out by AirTran.

Corrupt or weak ethics at ValuJet?

During the investigation, a Senior Vice President, told Safety Board officials that there were many discrepancies in maintenance and safety procedures. This potentially was due to the fast growth ValuJet was experiencing in the last few years. The planes were simply "not in the best shape".

I believe both companies were equally at fault. Hazardous, lethal issues were found, such as the faulty wiring. But SabreTech loaded defective oxygen generators in the cargo compartment. It's a matter of ethics to make sure that compliance and safety measures are observed at all times.

I am somewhat empathetic to the employees who came forwards afterwards. It's not always easy to speak up within a big company, especially one that was growing by leaps and bounds like ValuJet. But both companies must have realized they had passengers' and crews' lives in their hands, as well as the wellbeing of all the dependent stakeholders. Sometimes speaking up can put your job in jeopardy, and some people don't want to risk the livelihood that puts food on their tables, that's why I'm empathetic for the employees. The company is responsible for enforcing and establishing safety standards and protocols to protect lives.
