Since the late 2000s the Jonas Brothers trio have been known for their Pop-rock hits worldwide. The trio has had a significant influence on my creative influence and practice over the years. In each stage of my life, I have found that they have seemed to release an album or a song that resonates or relates to the current season in my life, whether it was their teenage angst albums or one of their countless love songs. It truly feels like I have grown up with them from my early adolescent years.

Avril Lavigne emerged into the Pop-punk scene in the early 2000s as a singer-songwriter. Her music resonated with most of the teenage girl population during that decade as it was about what any teenage girl cares about: boys and dating. While beginning her career in the pop-punk scene, Avril made a gradual shift to punk-rock. Avril has been quite passionate over the years about how her fans and the wider media perceives her and her music.

Genre has been a big influence in Avril's career and the topic hits home for her. The Media has described her as the pop-punk princess (Warner Music, 2022) of the 2000s however this may not be the truest perception as Donald C. Miller suggests in his book, Coming of Age in Popular Culture: Teenagers, Adolescence, and the Art of Growing Up, that the media typically relies on categorization of artists and content. This then leads labels, record producers, and other key executives who categorize the artist and their content to often not accurately reflect the artist's true genre (Miller, 2018, pp. 304–306).

One of Avril's influences and a staple in the late 90s Punk Rock era was the popular band Blink 182. They are known for songs like 'All the small things' and 'First Date'. Avril stated in an interview that her album, 'Love Sux,' was inspired by her days as a teenager listening to Blink 182, Green Day, and the likes of that Punk Pop era. She tapped into that to write the album (Shutler, 2021).

Another one of Avril's influences is another popular punk rock band, Green Day. Now it is seen over social media and in interviews that Avril and Green Day have a relationship of some sort, whether professional or a level of friendship. Avril congratulated Green Day on their 'I Heart Radio' Award in 2023 (Avril Lavigne, 2023). In another interview talking about her 9 favourite songs, Avril stated that 'Good Riddance (Time Of Your Life) reminded her of playing it in the family room of her childhood home and the song moves her every time she hears it (Kelly, 2022).

The Jonas Brothers' career took off towards the end of the manufactured boy band era that started with the Backstreet Boys and NSYNC. This era of music has many commercialised, manufactured, and authentic (or lack of) stereotypes, especially around 'selling out' and prioritising the charts over their artistry (Coleman & Lyons, 2023). Coleman and Lyons say that the image of boy bands' authenticity is complicated because many boy bands are undeniably corporate entities (Coleman & Lyons, 2023).

The Jonas brothers quoted in an interview with Andy Cohen on his talk show, 'What Happens Live with Andy Cohen' that when the brothers toured with the Backstreet Boys in 2006, Nick Carter gave them the advice of "Learn from your idol's mistakes and try to avoid them." The Jonas Brothers said that the Backstreet Boys were one of their idols (What Happens Live with Andy Cohen, 2023).
