Using the redesign and teachingtolerance resources on learning strategies I must have read 20-30 different strategies before deciding which ones would work best in class. Then once I started using those strategies it took a while for me to get good at teaching them and for the students to get used to them. Now that I've spent a whole term to use them, students are used to these strategies and I have fun teaching them. I've done a lot to get students to use predicting and questioning and making connections. One thing I might need a little help on or practice with is the Reflection strategies. I find that there's not always a lot of time left at the end of class for reflection because of all the other content I want to get through.

However, I repeatedly attempted to understand what our students would be experiencing if they had to read something equally challenging. Teachers can help guide students to create a toolbox of reading strategies that they will be able to know how to access . Common visuals of these key learning strategies could and should be posted throughout every content classroom so that we start to use and build the same language so kids get familiar with this toolbox. I liked the student facing slide deck. I am hoping people find it useful. Some teachers might be experts and might really be great at demonstrating a particular strategy. I would like to have us tap into each other as experts and perhaps a learning walk to see a particular learning strategy in action would be beneficial and inspiring. I am hoping we can maybe discuss this in content teams and set up times in learning walk pairs. In my group we had the opportunity to discuss how I can use some of these reading strategies with my students.  One of the key strategies we discussed was predicting in science.  When students conduct labs, hypothesis's are a good way to use prediction, but what about when students are reading expository text.  How can we use prediction when we are reading facts? We discussed this in length and came up with some ideas.

It is important specifically bring one or two into practice at a time. Create space to learn, model and explain the power of this skill.

- I need more time to reflect on how I might use these in my lessons.... I would love to look at my departments lessons and see how we might import them into our current practices.

It helps me realize the importance of providing our students with learning stratagies for every assignment. Many students who do not have the necessary skill or stratagies shut down. I'm eager to revisit reading strategies with this new perspective. I definitely need to take a step back and look at some back-to-basics practice to help students practice these skills routinely in class. Summarizing, visualizing, and predicting may feel familiar to them but practice and consistency with a specific focus on each strategy will help them adopt this practice and make it stick. I just used the word practice four times but it felt necessary!!

I think we should focus on one sticky note per poster (strategy). It was very powerful to be at a complete loss and continue to search for more strategies. The bigger bank we can give our students, the more chance they have of helping themselves in the future.
