The Mayan civilization created an advanced civilizations in Americas. The Mayans built their civilization on ideas they inherited from people called the Olmec, they lived in the jungle areas on the east coast of Mexico. The Olmec civilization was based on agriculture. There are 3 main periods of the Mayan civilization: Pre- Classic, Classic, and Post-Classic. During the Classic period, the Maya adapted and developed ideas that they've learned from the Olmec, the Mayan cities continued to prosper during the Post Classic.

During the Classic period, the Mayan society was divided into a social pyramid. The order of the social pyramid was Ruler, Nobles and Priests, Merchants and Artisans, Peasants, and Slaves. The lower Classes had a terrible life, but the Slaves weren't treated badly and the Peasants sometimes attend royal weddings, and religious events. The Mayan peasants used to live in one room huts built of interwoven poles covered with dry mud. Marriage was a big event for the Mayan youth, Men usually are married around the age of 20, and Women are usually married when they were as young as 14 years old.

The Aztec Empire was a fertile area nearly 8,000 feet above sea level, and the Aztecs arrived in the mid 1200s c.e. From about 100 to 650 c.e., the Valley of Mexico was dominated by the Teotihuacans, and the Teotihuacans built an enormous capital city which is Teotihuacan. The Teotihuacan’s collapsed around the 700s c.e., and a group called the Toltecs migrated into the valley. The Aztecs wandered through the desert of Mexico for many years before coming to the Valley of Mexico. The Tenochtitlan developed into one of the largest cities in the world as the Aztecs' power grew. The Aztec empire did not start as colonies nor did they forced to conquer peoples to adopt their ways.

The Tenochtitlan was the capital city of the Aztecs. Like the Mayans, the Aztecs had a class structure, each class had it's own privileges and responsibilities. The social structure order was the Ruler on the top , Government officials, Priests, and Military Leaders, then the Commoners, then the 2 bottom in the class structure was Peasants, and Slaves. Commoners can actually move up a social class by performing brave deeds in war or by studying being a priest. The markets were very important for the Aztec economy. At Tlatelolco, people bought and sold everything from food, utensils to warrior costumes, feathers and slaves.
