Dear Senator Stabenow,

My family and I go to the Florida Keys every year. One day when my sister and I were walking on the beach, I saw an abundance of trash and debris in the water. It made me feel so sad. I bet you like taking walks on the beach Senator Stabenow, how would you feel if the whole ocean was filled with trash. That's why you need to take action to prevent the issue of plastic pollution.

Plastic pollution is a problem because “Scientists think that 8.8 million tons of plastic winds up in the ocean every year,” (Plastic Pollution). This is a big deal because wildlife are endangered. A negative effect that plastic pollution has on the ocean is “Over 700 species of marine animals have been reported to have eaten or been entangled in plastic,”(Tiny Plastic, Big Problem). Marine animals are eating plastic, which is bad because it can kill marine life. Another piece of evidence is, “An autopsy found nearly 17 pounds of plastic inside the whale's belly." (In Thailand, 17 Pounds of Plastic Kills Whales, Highlighting Ocean Pollution). Plastic pollution can kill or sicken whales. Therefore, plastic pollution is bad for marine wildlife.

The solution is prevention. In this piece of evidence it says, “Talk to friends and parents about the problem of plastic, and pick up litter when you see it,” (Plastic Pollution). As you can see, we need to start preventing plastic pollution from happening. “Experts are encouraging people to look at alternatives like canvas bags and glass, metal or paper straws,”(Plastic Pollution). As you can see, that hasn't worked out so well. That's why you, Senator Stabenow, need to speak out. If you prevent this from happening, it will be one less thing you need to worry about. We don't need more plastic pollution in the ocean.

Senator Stabenow, I know you like taking walks on the beach and looking at the water as much as we do. So save our oceans and prevent plastic pollution. This move will be good for the future and for people who like taking walks on the beach. You can save the ocean for future families.

Sincerely,

        Bryce Branch
