The quote, “You May Lie” means that Jonas is now given the chance to lie. He’s not sure if he should - he looks to his father- but realizes its his own choice now. 

Well I lie sometimes, so I can relate to having been tempted to tell an untruth.

When Jonas becomes receiver. 

The saying - You may lie- is symbolic to Jonas’s transition into adulthood. 

The tone was a serious one- No one had ever been allowed to lie so the mood was tense. 

Well in real people are tempted to lie all the time. Its easy to lie your way through day to day events. 

Joans was stunned at this - these new rules effect him severely- Jonas now has to become an adult- He has to keep his mind pure while training.

THis relates to me because I am having to grow up a lot this year. I am having to make new habits for myself to prepare in my own way to train for adulthood. 

The significance of the quote is that it shows that anyone could have been lying to him and he would not know if something said to him is true.

It is important because it is a major event in the story and a new conflict for Jonas. In the real world anyone anyone can be lying to you and you may never know if they are telling the truth or not. This passage had a significant impact ony thinking about what is true and what is not.
