Jonas was told he could- it’s a symbol of becoming an adult. THe Giver was the one to tell Jonas he could lie.People are being assigned their forever jobs. Jonas was skipped in the ceremony & was embarrassed. But he got the most important role of all- the receiver of memory.

The quote, “You May Lie” means that Jonas is now given the chance to lie. He’s not sure if he should - he looks to his father- but realizes its his own choice now.

Well I lie sometimes, so I can relate to having been tempted to tell an untruth.

When Jonas becomes receiver.

The saying - You may lie- is symbolic to Jonas’s transition into adulthood.

The tone was a serious one- No one had ever been allowed to lie so the mood was tense.

Well in real people are tempted to lie all the time. Its easy to lie your way through day to day events.

Joans was stunned at this - these new rules effect him severely- Jonas now has to become an adult- He has to keep his mind pure while training.

THis relates to me because I am having to grow up a lot this year. I am having to make new habits for myself to prepare in my own way to train for adulthood.

When Jonas gets home from the ceremony of twelves he reads all the instructions for his new assignment and the last rule says “you may lie.” In other words the quote means Jonas has a decision to make will he lie to people? Or will he choose do the right thing and not lie? The author is trying to make us see that one of the rules of a receiver is that they can lie to others. Jonas doesn’t really like that rule, so he is conflicted with it, because he has to make a decision on whether or not he should lie. This quote is important because it tells us what the Receiver can do. Some people take advantage of the rule “you may lie.” This passage had me thinking about how people can lie when it can damage friendships.

Jonas was reading the rules he received for his selection. Jonas was shocked about this rule because his whole life he had been taught never to lie. If you need to keep something secret you may lie to anyone that includes your parents.

The significance of the quote is that it shows that anyone could have been lying to him and he would not know if something said to him is true.

It is important because it is a major event in the story and a new conflict for Jonas. In the real world anyone anyone can be lying to you and you may never know if they are telling the truth or not. This passage had a significant impact ony thinking about what is true and what is not.
