Richard Wright- The protagonist of this memoir. He is an intelligent, yet mischievous person. Wright has a strong interest in reading and writing, but also fears that he's not capable to meet people's expectations. He often makes trouble while in the position of defending himself.

Ella Wright- Mother of Richard Wright. She often beats Wright whenever she thinks is appropriate. Nevertheless, she is still the most loved person of Wright. Wright was extremely worried and sad when Ella falls sick and becomes paralyzed.

Granny- Richard's maternal grandmother. She is an extremely religious Seventh-Day-Adventist. She is often in the opposition of Richard Wright because she thinks Wright is evil and has practically zero tolerance for him.

Grandpa- Richard's maternal grandfather. He is always bitter about his war pension because of someone misspelling his name which invalidated his war pension.

Aunt Addie- A sister of Ella Wright. She lives with Granny in Jackson, Mississippi. Tension often grows between Addie and Wright because Addie holds the same religious belief as Granny. Wright would hold a knife to threaten Addie when she tries to humiliate and beat Wright. Wright is basically dead in her eyes.

Black Boy is written by Richard Wright, an African-American author who was born in 1908 telling his youth in the Jim Crow South. Wright was quite a troublemaker throughout his childhood. He'd made indefinite troubles such as burning his house, becoming a drunkard at a local saloon by the age of six, and disrespecting his Granny by saying the wrong thing, etc. In spite of this, he'd shown his enthusiasm in reading and writing. Due to family hardships such as hunger, poverty and the desertion of Nathan Wright, Richard Wright's father, he and his mother made several trips to live with their relatives and finally settled in his Granny's house. In addition to Wright's mother being paralytic, he faced a new problem: Wright lacked interest in religion which conflicted Granny and Aunt Addie's religious doctrines. Thus, there were often in opposition to each other and they both saw him as a sinful child. Not only that Wright was facing religious conflict, but he was also "exploring" racism that happened around him. Wright often heard about White people treating Black people poorly and beating them, but he didn't really understand why such discrimination happened.
