Which Is The Better Story?

In my opinion, the story using the animals is a far better story. The use of symbolism makes the story more intriguing and exciting. The different animals chosen to represent each of the humans were chosen in representation of the personality of each. Some people may not believe the story using the animals, however it is a better way to describe what happened without exposing the truth. The details of the animal story like the killing and the dominance issue between the tiger and Pi, relate much more closely with characteristics that are often attributed to animals. The killing of each animal by another and the ultimate dominance of the human towards the tiger, Richard Parker, makes sense with the animals. By telling it with animals, it masks the truth behind the inhuman actions of the humans in the human version. The animal version of the story is more in depth and gets the reader emotionally involved.

Human Dignity *

The animal story is a version Pi chose to say first for several
reasons. Many of these reasons are why the animal story is a far better story than the human one. Ultimately, Richard Parker, the tiger, along with all the other animals end up killing each other, leaving Richard Parker the last one standing. This means that, in the human story, everyone including Pi, killed one another and turned to cannibalism. This is a far more disturbing version of the story since we expect more of humans. The cannibalism was a result of starvation and as a means of survival and the reader forgives the animals; however, to know that it was actually humans, would force the reader to acknowledge that we all have the potential to behave as animals and turn towards inhuman behavior. Therefore, in telling the animal story, it is protecting the reader from the dark side of humanity.

Within the animal story, Pi explains that he believes Richard Parker is the only reason he is still alive. The strong connection and mutual respect they have elicits many emotions in the reader. A sort of attachment forms between them and Pi explains that the fear of him keeps him alert, tending to his needs gives him purpose, and that they are both left to face this challenge together.

Relationships <3

The relationship between Pi and Richard Parker is one of the most intriguing aspects of the animal version of the story. In the beginning of the novel, Pi's father exposes the children the horrific consequences that can happen with close encounters with Bengal tigers. The animal story contradicts this by illustrating the development of an emotional relationship between Pi and the tiger. This unusual and unlikely relationship between them draws the reader into the story. Readers even see a side of sadness when Pi and Richard Parker part ways at the end of the novel. Pi says, "I was weeping because Richard Parker had left me s unceremoniously. What a terrible thing it is to botch a farewell." This gives insight to the unusual emotions Pi has towards Richard Parker.
