“According to the police, Mr. Watts had been having an affair with a co-worker, and in the early hours of Aug. 13, he told his wife he wanted to separate.”

Dr. Oz's claim that the opposite of anger is empathy does not hold true in all cases. In the Chris Watts case, anger did not directly lead to his horrifying actions—his lack of empathy did. His crimes were not just impulsive outbursts of rage but calculated decisions. He maintained a calm, deceptive front for weeks, even participating in public interviews pretending to care about his ‘missing’ family. If anger were the true opposite of empathy, we would expect his crimes to be the result of uncontrollable rage, not deliberate manipulation. This proves that anger and a lack of empathy are not opposite, but rather separate psychological forces with different roots.

Explanation: The study "The Influence of Anger and Empathy and the Theory of Mind", published in the National Library of Medicine, investigated the relationship between empathy and anger. They "induce anger in the experimental group" (EG) and tested their level of empathy, anger, shame, and relaxation. There was a significant increase in anger and shame and a decrease in relaxation for the experimental group. However, there was little to no difference between empathy scores for either group.

Context : The study "Social cognition in aggressive offenders: Impaired empathy, but intact theory of mind" sampled people with a record of physically aggressive crimes and tested their empathetic response to emotional videos (experimental group). They compared it to the level of empathy to a sample of people without a criminal record. They found that the experimental group with criminal records showed significantly less empathy.

Argumentation : This supports Dr. Oz's position that empathy opposes anger. Since the group with an aggressive criminal record is more emotionally inflamed, they showed less empathy, which is what Dr. Oz was predicting.

The study ‘The Influence of Anger and Empathy and the Theory of Mind’ found that increasing anger did not significantly decrease empathy, disproving Dr. Oz’s claim that empathy is the opposite of anger. This evidence proves that Dr. Oz’s claim is incorrect: anger does not necessarily oppose empathy, and the two emotions function independently.
