<title>Volcano Eruption A volcano on the Kamchatka Peninsula erupted in Russia on March 26th sending out an ash plume into the sky that traveled 60 miles to the southwest. Also NASA&#39;s Aura satellite can identified a sulfur dioxide (SO2) trail to the south of the volcano. This can be very dangerous to the people living near there. With an eruption of this size the ash plumes and sulfur released into the environment can cause many problems for the environment in those areas. </title>

<title>Marijuana in New Zealand The New Zealand economy has a large dependency on dairy farming, but Virgin Group founder and billionaire Sir Richard Branson thinks that they should make a shift to a new kind of farming for purposes of sustainability. Having 5 million dairy cows leads to major amounts of pollution in the rivers and fresh water sources. He also believes that the War on Drugs is not working and would be a good source of revenue to the farmers as opposed to dairy cows. He says that growing Marijuana would have a smaller impact on the environment and would also add revenue through taxes to the government. </title>

<title>Permafrost Defrost As global warming continues to take hold on the earth many places where the ground used to be frozen permafrost is starting to thaw this article explains all things that happen as the ground defrosts and releases the gases and other things that where trapped in the ice.  this is a problem because this process releases a lot of greenhouse gasses into the atmosphere and continues to contribute to the positive feedback loop of global warming.  This is a growing problem because it is a positive feed back loop and will only worsen as time progresses.</title>

<title>Hunting in Alaska On march 21st the senate overturned Alaska&#39;s hunting laws and reinstituted the hunting of predatorily species like bears and wolves even if it is a mother with its cubs.  They are trying to boost the populations of other animals that those animals pray on by hunting them to reduce the number of predators in Alaska.  this passed with a 52-47 vote in the senate.  this could work but it could also lead to possible overgrazing with the number of herbivories growing. </title>

<title>Bioluminescent Algae Beaches in Tasmania are starting to see a new type of algae entering their ecosystems. This algae is called Noctiluca scintillans, that flourishes in low oxygen water, is blooming along the beaches and is pushing out the base of the food chain that exists there now diatoms, which are microscopic algae. these new algae create light through a chemical process that could make red, blue, or green light. This is different from biofluorescents absorbing light and releasing a lower frequency. If these algae replace the other algae that are there the food web could crash and would destroy the whole ecosystem that is there.</title>

<title>Wind Power in the Artic Scientist have started to think of ideas to slow the shrinking of the ice caps at the poles. This loss of ice is caused by global warming and is rising the level of the sea. The idea is to put wind powered pumps on the ice and have them pump up colder water from beneath the ice caps to the surface and have it freeze over so that even as it warms up there is more ice so the process will be slowed. This is a ridiculous idea to actually implement the scaling of it would be very difficult and to spread the turbines all over the ice caps would be very difficult and to maintain or repair them would be even more difficult. This just seems like it would be a project to start and quickly fail.</title>
