The Mayo Clinic is developing a new method to detect neurodegenerative diseases by analyzing changes in a patient’s voice and speech patterns. According to Dr. Hugo Botha, a behavioral neurologist, early signs of conditions such as ALS, Parkinson’s disease, and frontotemporal dementia often appear in a person’s voice (Stiepan, 2024). Patients can record voice samples remotely using their phones or laptops, allowing for ongoing monitoring over time. These samples contribute to a growing speech bank used for research and AI training to improve early diagnosis and care. This summary was written with assistance from ChatGPT (OpenAI, 2025).

I personally think it's a great idea. I understand that not all people will be on board with their voice being used by AI but is that really worth the late diagnosis of a neurodegenerative disease that could have been treated earlier when the problem was less severe? For me, the solution is practical and affordable and easy to integrate. It doesn't require much infrastructure to maintain and not only does it immediately help the patient but it can also help other patients by using previous data for research. Overall, I consider this to be a fantastic innovation.
