"I was supposed to teach six months out of the year, but actually I taught only five and a half months, from late October to the middle of April, when the children were not needed in the field." (Gaines 34)

We might think that a shorter school year is a good thing, but this just shows how unfortunate these kids were. They dealt with so much poverty that they were taken out of school in order to work in the fields, so these children did not have the opportunity to learn and get ahead.

"Exactly what I'm trying to do here with you now: to make you responsible young men and young ladies. But you, you prefer to play with bugs. You refuse to study your arithmetic, and you prefer writing slanted sentences instead of straight ones. Does that make any sense?" (Gaines 39)

Here Grant is trying to explain to the kids that their future depends on their education. He is trying to get them to care more about their work, but instead they would rather be playing or just not listening. He is trying to get them to understand that being educated is more than just learning things in school, it is doing what you are asked and completing things the right way.

What people do not realize about the importance of education is that with this day an age you can not do anything with out a college degree. Most jobs require you to have a basic two-year college degree or at least a high school diploma. In society the more education that you have the further you get ahead. The thing about education is that it helps us realize our potential, in society today everyone is required to go to school; we have to pass classes to move on or we get held back and that is how it goes. Education is an important basis in life because you not only learn the things they want you to, but you can learn patience, discipline, and many other things from working.

This song relates because this person is telling a story about a friend who went to a job interview and was essentially being told that without an education they will not be able to get a job. The person told him, "Without an education you might as well be dead." So he decided to go back to school because he realized he needed an education. He then told his friends and got them to go back to school as well and then they all got jobs after going back to school.

"They are acting exactly as the old men did earlier. They are fifty years younger, maybe more, but doing the same thing those old men did who never attended school a day in their lives. Is it just a vicious circle? Am I doing anything?" (Gaines 31)

Here you can tell that Grant is frustrated because he has been teaching kids for so long and he doesn't see his teaching effecting the way his students behave now, and what they will become in the future.

"I teach because it is the only thing that an educated black man can do in the South today. I don't like it; I hate it." (Gaines 38)

This quote shows why Grant's students don't care about learning things in class. It's because there is no point. If the students know that they will never have the oppourtunity to become a lawyer, doctor or whatever else they would want to be, they won't care about the lessons or have any motivation to learn.
