Born in Germany in 1829, Levi Strauss was a very successful man when he came to San Francisco, CA in early 1853. Levi made his way out to San Francisco because the Gold Rush was going on and people from all over the world came there in search of their own fortune. Levi was no exception. While there, he sold goods to the mining trade. Also he sold clothing, fabric, and other items to shops in the region. In 1872 a customer wrote to Levi in search of help with his business. The man said that he made his own business to make durable pants. He could not cover his cost for the patents for his design, so he asked if Levi could support his ideas and help him purchase the patent. A year later, the patent was approved. Strauss thought that the demand for these "waist overalls" were going to be high. Eventually, Strauss started his own pants company in the city and soon became a millionaire. He started giving his nephews more responsibility for the company. Later, he died in his home on September 26, 1902. His nephew Jacob Stern took over as president and the company lived on.

This affected the world back then by improving work conditions in the factories and in the mines. It also made it safer to work in the factories where injuries were common because it protected the persons legs more than normal pants would. Also the pants kept people warm in cold condtions.
