Participatory Music

I've personally never participated in Karaoke, besides doing what the last assignment said and trying it a little on my own. I'm a rather shy person so I have never even thought to go on stage and sing on my own, but I do like to sing to myself whether it be in the shower or in the car by myself. Like presentational music, participatory allows you to express yourself. Nothing says self love like singing your heart out to your favorite song with no one there to critique you. Songs with a participatory aspect are fun and create real happy vibes. In this style, its all about having fun. Being in an african-american family, a lot of family gatherings turn into dancing/singing sessions. Participatory music is also big in the church. A lot of the music is made to sing along and dance to.

I've only attended one concert. It was a year ago at the state fair when Nelly performed a lot of his old hits. It was a good experience, even if I was not particularly a Nelly fan. Presentational music is more perofmance based than participatory. Presentational is more often done by music professionals who people come to see perform and put on a music show. Their delivery and lyrics may matter even more than a participatory style song. In presentational, the audience always gets involved, but they are not the focus of the performance.

"It is simply that in participatory traditions a priority is placed on encouraging people to join in regardless of the quality of their contributions" (Turino,35)

“No surprisingly…many of the ideas most deeply embedded in our thinking about music today can be traced back to the ferment of ideas that surrounded the reception of Beethoven’s music. In this section, I focus on two of these ideas: the relationship of authority which permeate musical culture, and the power of music to transcend boundaries of time and space.” (Cook, 24)

"In participatory events, the element of time is important, as in effort to sacrifice involved in supporting the ceremony by playing and dancing when one would rather have been home in bed" (Turino,132).
